I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to assure them that they are making progress. They shouldn't be compared to their peers, but rather themselves from before. I'm very patient and I understand that the reason many of the young people going to extra tutoring do so because they need help. I am aware that the students…

The most important things a tutor can do for s student is make sure he/she has outstanding communication skills to be able to communicate whether the student is on the right track with the problem, not on the right track or has solved the problem. Another topic that is important is for a tutor to show patience when the student does not get the…

Not only academic but also personal growth is what I consider most important. While academic improvement is a key focus and often a priority for students and their parents, I believe fostering curiosity and building confidence should be integral to the teaching process. Tutors and teachers play a vital role in nurturing students, helping them grow…

A tutor can change a student's life in ways more than one. She can help them find their confidence. She can, also, help them believe in themselves and encourage them to ask questions they have been scared to ask in their classes. A tutor can help a student overcome their fears and help them improve. Apart from helping the students achieve their…

Having both been the tutee and the tutor, I believe that it is imperative that a tutor is supportive of the student and caters their teaching to the student's specific needs. Tutoring is only truly effective when the student is completely engaged with the tutor and I believe that this can only happen when the student believes that they are in an…

Students, in my opinion, are like clay that can be molded in any way. And if I have such a wonderful opportunity, I'll do everything in my power to make the most of it. I believe that a tutor should always be ready to help pupils with their concerns. In order for students to do better under him, a tutor must not only assist students academically…

Approach tutoring with an open mind. Some students can easily grasp the concepts while the others it may take time or a special approach for them to understand.Making the student feel comfortable is very important to allow them to express themselves and feel free to ask if they don't understand. It is always for me to put their thoughts first and give them the importance. It is simply how a student learn and grow. A little bit of channeling of concepts, guidance and being there as a support is what makes it work. It is all about concepts how well you know them and how easy you can make them for students to understand. I always try to…

I believe that it is incredibly important for a tutor to inspire their student to achieve their very best in terms of their academics. I also believe that a tutor can act as a more relatable source of academic help instead of a teacher; a tutor can provide more in depth help outside the class room. I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

Harrison is extremely well mannered and diligent. He will often give his own time to ensure that Kate understands before he leaves. He is patient, calm and has lots of great strategies to simplify and explain maths and my daughters maths marks have improved. Thank you so much Harrison.

Inside PaddingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex worked through final exam revision, tackling two worksheets with a focus on resolving specific questions that had caused confusion in class.

For Year 10, Olivia spent the lesson practising algebraic operations involving fractions and completing school homework problems to reinforce her understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Priya concentrated on calculus topics such as rates of change and differentiation using first principles and the power rule, applying these methods to textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, a student hesitated to show full working when tackling trigonometric identities—she tried to do steps mentally, but small sign errors crept in, noted the tutor.

For a Year 4 learner, forgetting to bring math books from school meant key division homework was incomplete and revision suffered.

In Year 9, one student's layout in problem-solving tasks made their reasoning hard to follow; answers were present, but skipped lines caused confusion when reviewing mistakes.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student lost track of older concepts while focusing only on new material, leading to gaps during mixed-topic tests.

Recent Achievements

One Paddington tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to quietly guess on difficult algebra questions now speaking up when stuck and asking for hints, which helped her finish the worksheet with only two errors.

A senior student who previously mixed up integration rules was able to clearly explain which formula fit each problem, working through a full set of calculus questions without needing reminders.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who hesitated to start homework independently has begun tackling spelling lists right away, even double-checking tricky words before the session ended.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brisbane Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Petrie Terrace State School.
