One of the most important things when tutoring is to maxmise your effort to help a student in any way possible, without actually doing an assignment/answering the question for them. I believe my role as a tutor is to help grow self-efficacy and to empower my students, so they are confident in tackling any problem. I am well spoken and am able to…

I think patience is the most important skill a tutor can have. Some students don't understand a concept right away, I had to have a concept explained to me multiple times before and if the tutor was patient I was not scared to ask. I think as I have been tutored before I knew what worked for me and what didn't so I could apply those ideas. This…

I believe it is important for tutors to build students' confidence and boost their self-esteem. It is important to acknowledge that a student is doing well when they truly are; to encourage them to be resilient when it gets tough. This way students are able to conquer any challenge without fear which enables them to learn more effectively. This…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to enable a student with essential skills, both related to subject taught, as well as life skills. In this way, the student can go on to become an independent learner. My strengths are in being able to put myself in the child's shoes and explain the way he/she wants it. My weakness is that I often give…

I believe that a tutor should be extremely cautious in what they say; can everything be supported with a logical statement? Because the steps the tutors take to construct the answer are how the students learn from them, a tutor must prepare well and be confident and knowledgeable of what they are giving to the students. It's not about providing…

I believe the most important things I can do for a student would be to provide them with valuable advice and guidance through their studies. I believe a tutor's job, especially for secondary level Mathematics and Chemistry, is to first and foremost, build a solid foundation of knowledge. Once these foundations are set, my job as a tutor is to refine my student's understandings of more difficult concepts and clarifying any queries they may have on content covered in school, ensuring…

With my previous experience both as being a tutor and being tutored by someone else, I believe a tutor should pay a fundamental role in empowering students to take ownership of their learning. Being able to properly connect with the student is important in building trust so that the student is open and honest about their ability and will ask questions when they don't understand new or existing concepts. Ultimately, a tutor must teach his/her student to be able to rely on themselves and think autonomously when problem solving i.e. not to be afraid of trial and error. Students often break down because they feel everything that is happening to them is unique to them. My understanding of…

At this point, we are happy with the way things are progressing. Ryan seems a bright and capable young man and Kirsten does feel the sessions are assisting her.

Inside PadstowTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Pranay focused on spelling difficult words and improving his story writing by revising descriptive introductions, while also practising basic reading and comprehension skills.

Year 6 student Beau worked through multiplying and dividing fractions as well as order of operations, with extra practice using maths mentals exercises to strengthen understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Grace tackled equivalent fractions—learning how to cancel them out—and moved into adding and subtracting decimals, often applying concepts through worked examples in her homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, not applying written feedback on story drafts meant improvements in structure and clarity were missed—one note read, "I have given him both verbal and written feedback... I would like him to start applying it."

A Year 7 student hesitated to ask questions during class or tutoring, missing chances to clarify misunderstood concepts.

In Year 6 maths, skipping working out led to difficulties tracing errors later ("she is forgetting to show this when answering questions both during the tutoring session and whilst completing homework").

By lesson's end, a Year 7 student often disengaged, leaving harder problems unfinished.

Recent Achievements

One Padstow tutoring session saw a high school student, Noah, take real ownership of his study by breaking down an English assessment with the tutor and independently committing to submit a final essay draft by a set deadline—a big shift from needing step-by-step guidance.

Another win came when Robine, also in high school, started leaving questions blank in her homework if she was unsure, instead of guessing—she now actively asks for help so she can fix mistakes together during sessions.

Meanwhile, younger student Pranay proudly shared that he's begun regularly asking his teacher clarifying questions at school when confused.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Padstow Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Southside Montessori School.
