Like I said, patience and comfortable environment created between the tutor and the student. Rest all can be taken care of by referring to the respective books and study materials. Interactive studies make students remember and understand topics really well. If a tutor can help the student to enjoy the subjects, then it becomes an activity which…

The most important thing I believe a tutor can do for the students is to understand and listen to them and their needs. When a tutor listens and spends time building a relationship with his/her student, it allows the tutor to personalise the learning for the student by incorporating connections to the student's interests. In addition, it allows…

Become students’ friends so you can lead the children to the book, most students don’t want study because the teacher is too strict and always pushing them, if the tutor can become their friends, they can lead the student to study voluntary. I’m patient enough to take care of a children’s work and I can spend more time with him or her to…

Above all, a teacher should be compassionate. Compassion matters more than anything else. I feel that I try to understand students rather than simply trying to teach them. We all have weaknesses, and being able to identify them, especially when they are not easily visible, is the most important…

According to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence and positive mindset in a student which can empower the student to take on challenges. Developing a love for learning also goes a long way, as a tutor teaches a subject which he likes he can encourage curiosity and passion for the subject in his students…

The goal of tutoring should be to empower students and thus the primary focus of tuition should be to develop confidence and independence rather than reliance. For this reason, I believe the most important component of tutoring is not working through content, but reflecting and future planning to ensure the student believes they have the skills…

The most important thing for a tutor is to provide a fun learning environment for the student and empower them to learn. A tutor should be able to motivate the students to organise, formulate study goals and most importantly self learn and self improve. I think the most important thing is to encourage students. When students facing difficulties, they need encouragement; when they successfully solved a question, they need encouragement. The core of encouragement is to give our students confidence. Be able to explain the problem patiently, break down the incomprehensible problem, draw inferences…

For me, the most important thing is helping students actually enjoy math and feel comfortable with the process of not knowing right away. A lot of math is about sitting with that discomfort, resisting the urge to panic, and trusting that if you think logically, you’ll find a way through—even if it’s not the “textbook†method. I want…

I think it is the ability to understand the student's capability and their needs. Therefore, as a tutor, I can provide personalised learning lessons that are suitable to the student, hence, they can still progress at their own pace without too much pressure. Make sure that you're not doing the work for them, only assisting them in their learning- For it will be them sitting the exam come the end of the year. By teaching them not only the subject matter but also the skills to mold themselves to every problem or question, you'll be instilling confidence in them that no matter what is introduced to them…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is to build a strong personal relationship with the student. Regularly interact with them and get to know areas in which they need extra support. It is important that we as tutors listen and communicate early and often with parents. It is important to inform the parents about any knowledge gaps…

Based on the understanding, a tutor can design customized lesson plans to attract students to learn. Additionally, a tutor can provide continuous feedback in way students are comfortable with to demonstrate where students have…

Inside ParksideTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Kallan worked on fraction revision and timetables practice, focusing on understanding part-whole relationships using number lines.

For Year 10, Emily tackled algebraic expressions—specifically simplifying with index laws—and solved equations involving ratios and rational numbers.

In Year 11, Sam focused on mastering quadratics through factorisation and expansion, as well as sketching parabolic graphs from given equations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student preparing for maths assessments repeatedly hesitated to write down answers, often second-guessing herself even when her solutions were correct. As a tutor noted, "she knows and understands what she's doing," but lacked confidence to show her working fully in algebra.

In Year 11 Child Studies, procrastination meant key drafts and interviews were left until the last minute; this delayed teacher feedback and created ongoing stress about deadlines.

Meanwhile, a senior English student failed to make all required corrections from previous feedback—despite reminders—which led to repeated sessions spent re-editing rather than progressing with new content.

Recent Achievements

One Parkside tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on parabolic equations—she can now illustrate coordinates on graphs and interpret those tricky equations without hesitation.

In Year 9, another student who'd always relied on writing out every algebra step surprised her tutor by solving equations mentally for the first time, showing real independence.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4, who previously avoided reading aloud, tackled an entire short story solo and even started proofreading her own work after learning new strategies during their session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Unley Civic Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Parkside Primary School.
