I think the best thing a tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. Tutoring isn't just about getting through the syllabus, it's about showing students how to think…

Implement creativity and a willingness to try is the most important skill a tutor can pass on to their students. Once a student builds a willingness to try and a need to challenge themselves, they will be more likely to build good habits and routines around creating these pathways for themselves. I always ask myself 'how do students learn' and…

The most important thing I can do for my students is to help them reach their goals, i.e. if they want high grades help them with that, but if they just want to pass then helping them to do that is just as important I have a deep understanding of school content and syllabus, an appreciation of the subject, an ability to explain complex information…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is believe in them and their abilities. By encouraging students and believing in them students will gain confidence in themselves and develop resilience. Students will then be able to do anything they put their minds to as they have a solid mental foundation to fall back on. I am a patient and…

Being able to reduce the stress of a student by allowing them to understand and thrive at maths is extremely important. I am in my final year of my Aerospace Systems Engineering degree. Within this degree I have to use maths and physics to solve problems almost daily, giving me a great understanding of the two subjects. I also recently completed…

Tutor has to be completely sure that students understood all provided information very clear. This gives them filling of confidence, happiness, and satisfaction. I can explain the information in different simple understandable ways. When I studied Diploma in Building and Construction in TAFE, we had subject which called structure. I could explain…

I believe a truly effective tutor can accurately pinpoint the source of a student's struggle with a particular topic, and propose the correct solution. For example, trouble with foundational concepts often stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of the basics, therefore it is important to readdress the theory portion of the topic and provide…

I think the most important thing is taking the pressure off being “perfectâ€. There is no such thing as perfection and everyone reaches success differently. What works for one person may not work for another and in standardised exams, this often gets misconstrued, adding to the weight of being the perfect student. My patience and positive…

I think that whilst having adaptive teaching methods is important, ensuring the student constantly feels supported and motivated by the tutor is vital. For me, in school no matter how much I was struggling (especially in maths) I found that having a great, understanding teacher, allowed me to not be afraid of asking ‘stupid’ questions. So for…

Provide support both academically and mentally. This can be done through practicing a topic of a subject, and also helping schedule their weeks, so they know they will still have social/leisure time, and maximize their grades and themselves. I am incredibly confident and happy to also learn new things. For example, if a student comes to me and…

A tutors responsibility isn't to provide answers, but to guide students to find their way of learning and to provide alternative approaches when tackling problem scenarios or questions. To be a successful tutor is to develop students mindsets and enable them to eventually trust in their instinct and decide for themselves the best way to go about a…

As a tutor/educator the most important factor to foster with your student is that you are honest and patient. Each student develops at their own pace. My strengths include: *I have found that working with special needs students has helped me to become a more compassionate and patient educator. *My ability to review my own methods if progress is…

I would have to say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is show them the beauty in a subject the student may not so much enjoy. This allows the student to achieve goals as their newfound perspective on the topic has changed to positive. I personally experienced this within my own studies. I went from a poorly achieving student…

i consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is encourage them to question and interpret the content in a way which suits themselves. Inside PatongaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lily worked on multiplying mixed fractions and dividing fractions, using visual aids to clarify each step.

In Year 8, Josh tackled rearranging formulas to make a chosen variable the subject and substituted values into equations for practice with algebraic manipulation.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Chloe focused on financial maths, including calculating profit and understanding cost price versus selling price as part of her upcoming assessment preparation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7, one student found it difficult to consistently show working for trigonometry problems; she often skipped steps when rearranging SOHCAHTOA, making it harder to catch sign errors later.

A Year 9 learner practicing worded algebraic equations hesitated to translate descriptions into equations, sometimes leaving diagrams incomplete or unclear—this meant the core of multi-step questions was missed.

At a senior level, a Year 11 student attempted tax calculation questions but relied on notes rather than memorising formulas, which slowed progress under timed conditions and left gaps when notes weren't available in practice exams.

Recent Achievements

One Patonga tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to skip tricky algebra steps now working through each part, even asking for clarification instead of guessing.

In Year 8, a student who often mixed up formulas started bringing prepared questions to sessions and could independently identify which formula to use for composite shape areas.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner—who previously hesitated when comparing fractions—recently explained why 3/5 is larger than 2/5 without prompting, showing real reasoning rather than just guessing the answer.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Umina Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Umina Beach Public School.
