I truly think empowering a student to ask questions is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. The confidence to ask questions leads to a student's ability to think for themselves. This combination is what allows maximum progress. I am patient and I am attentive, allowing me to pinpoint the exact area of confusion and tailor…

Being able to communicate with them in a friendly way, and not making them feel intimidated. Having to understand what study method is the best for them. Being patient in trying to help them understand better is important as they will then feel more comfortable and confident in doing or solving questions. I believe I can communicate effectively…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to make the subject matter enjoyable for students. 1. I believe my strengths would be being able to empathise with students, having a positive attitude towards learning, teaching and my subject, I have excellent communication skills and I'm patient and tolerant. 2. While I was a peer tutor, I…

Due to Nakita's tutor doing an amazing job last year, Nakita has not needed his skills for the beginning of this year, comprehending and understanding the maths content at school extremely well.

Inside PetrieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Poppy explored scale factors and calculated the volume of cylinders and rectangular prisms using visual examples.

In Year 10, Tasha practised finding the surface area of various shapes and reviewed exam topics with a focus on applying formulas accurately.

For Year 11, Ella worked through her in-class maths assignment, clarifying key steps for each question and addressing areas she found confusing to boost her understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student often rushed through differentiation and trigonometry, leading to small mistakes between dollar and cent coins as noted by the tutor.

In Year 7, one student left most worded maths problems blank on a worksheet, hesitating to attempt unless completely sure—a pattern that carried into test revision.

For a Year 9 assignment, another relied on "guessing equations to see if it works," instead of building methodical strategies or using class notes for guidance.

Meanwhile, in primary maths, several students avoided writing their working out, which hid small errors and made it hard to spot where understanding broke down during subtraction or time calculations.

Recent Achievements

One Petrie tutor noticed that a Year 11 student, Kiana, arrived with a list of tricky maths questions she'd struggled with in class—by the end of their session, she worked through every one independently and even finished early.

In another session, Clancey (Year 9) started unsure about rearranging equations but, after some guided practice, was able to solve them on his own without needing help.

Meanwhile, Tamia in Year 4 tackled her reading comprehension story solo and answered almost all follow-up questions correctly, remembering key details and going back to check when unsure.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Lakes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kurwongbah State School.
