I believe getting to know the students learning style is essential. They may learn best with kinesthetic based learning and not auditory based as much. So, depending on the altering it to help them learn best it super important to make sure they understand in the easiest way for them. I believe I am very friendly and easy to talk to making it easy…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can provide a student is confidence. It is paramount that a tutor encourages the student to become intrinsically motivated to study and to cultivate a love for the subject, as this will allow the student to fully achieve their potential. Ensuring that a student has confidence and self belief can be just as…

To never make them feel like they've been given up on or that they can't possible get smarter. There should always be a way for the child to understand the concept, you just need to find the best way to describe it. Able to dumb down concepts and relate them to as many other possibly known concepts as possible. Also to make funny questions to keep…

Clear communication in all aspects would be extremely important. From goal setting to learning and understanding, it's important that it's done in a way that suits a student and their learning style. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them build confidence in their own abilities. A tutor should create a safe and supportive space where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes without judgment. It’s also important to teach students how to think critically and solve problems on their own,…

The most important thing I could do as a tutor for my student would be to be able to share a different style of learning to them and to teach them how to love the subject they are studying. The most common thing about many of my most memorable teachers and tutors, was that they taught me these lessons, and so I hope to pass that on. As a tutor, I…

Most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be patient with them until they understand a concept, and not just tell them the answer. Making the student think about the problem and solve it themselves is the way the student learns and thrive academically, My strengths as a tutor are trying to find ways to explain the same concept in a…

An essential aspect for a tutor would be to approach teaching the topic in a way that is comfortable but fun for the student, allowing them to digest what needs to be taught in learnable chunks that do not cause trouble in calling back information. Inside Pickering BrookTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Dylan practised converting percentages to decimals and interpreting two-way tables, then applied these skills to Venn diagrams and basic probability questions.

For Year 9, Tanvi focused on film study analysis techniques by examining themes and symbols in "Rabbit-Proof Fence," followed by annotating poetry for assessment preparation.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Liam tackled linear equations—identifying knowns and unknowns—and worked through practice problems involving index laws and simultaneous equations for further algebraic fluency.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, an incomplete research homework on World War I meant the lesson was spent catching up, delaying progress on essay writing. "We had to complete the research first before writing," a tutor noted.

For Year 8 Maths, messy written work and inconsistent layout made it difficult to spot sign errors in equations—extra time was spent untangling steps instead of practicing new concepts.

In Year 6, hesitation and fear of making mistakes led to pauses before tackling negative numbers or word problems; this slowed learning and built anxiety during multi-step questions.

Recent Achievements

In Year 10 maths, Niru, who previously hesitated to speak up during lessons, has started describing his problem-solving steps out loud and now checks over his test mistakes independently—something he never did before.

Meanwhile, a high school student working on English assessments managed to write her review independently for Rabbit-Proof Fence, asking only for feedback instead of direct help.

In a younger year group, one student who struggled with division of fractions earlier was able to apply the concept confidently—even when variables were introduced—showing real progress from last term's difficulties.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kalamunda Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carmel Adventist College.
