I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make learning accessible, and create a supportive environment. A good tutor should focus on helping the student understand concepts rather than just memorizing answers. It's also crucial to listen actively, recognize their unique learning style, and…

Build clear understanding of fundamentals, not just help complete tasks. A tutor should explain concepts step-by-step, fill gaps in prior knowledge, and ensure the student can apply ideas independently. Adapt to the student’s learning style and pace. This includes adjusting explanations, using different examples, and checking understanding…

The best thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to make any problem easy to solve with the right understanding. A tutors purpose is accomplished when a student becomes comfortable to take on any academic challenge while enjoying it. I am very passionate about learning and I am always happy to answer questions and explain idea in…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are build the student’s confidence, tailor the learning to their individual needs, and support steady, consistent improvement. I also believe reliability and clear communication are essential for creating trust and helping the student feel supported throughout their learning journey. All of which…

Being willing to help, but also acknowledge the rare instances where a tutor may be unable to help to a confident level. I believe it is better to acknowledge if you do not know something rather than pretend you do and risk teaching something that is incorrect. When this problem is encountered, however, it is up to the tutor to rectify this by…

Allowing students to feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions knowing they won’t be judged but only helped. This is important as it is leads towards students to succeed and become confident in their skills. My strengths are understanding the students feeling of stress and pressure of needing to get better grades and how that…

A tutor is someone that helps students with their academic studies so that they get a better understanding of the subject .So for example, for biology subject ,a tutor needs to explain the concept rather then helping them reciting the subject without understanding. When students grasp the concept of the subject ,they are less likely to forget it…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them the motivation and confidence they need in a subject so that they believe they can achieve their goals. I believe my ability to relate to the situation of many students is one of my strengths. More specifically, I am able to give my students advice based on the skills and…

A believe a tutor should be more than just someone who teaches the work. the tutors become someone who the child/ student can look up to as a positive role model. As a tutor, my biggest strengths would have to be flexibility. I try to be as flexible as possible when choosing times and availabilities to suit you. As well as i am able to adapt to…

Patience is the most important thing to have in a tutor because students don’t always understand it straightaway and it takes time and practice for people to be good at it. I also think that encouragement is beneficial because it lets students know that this is not impossible and it will get easier and understood better. I am a quick problem…

Allow them to learn at their own pace as enforcing systems onto them does not benefit anyone. If they are having trouble understanding theories continue to teach them in different lights until they fully understand. Allow them to figure things out on their own but provide a helping hand that points them in the right direction. This means you may…

Local Reviews

Very easy to get started. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Quick service with the actual tutor calling almost the next day to sort out when available. Big improvement in my Year 9 child's math studies. It has really helped her to understand Maths; with her knowledge being quite basic to start with. Was failing and within 3 months got her first pass in a major math test.
Gabriella, Point Cook

Inside Point CookTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Daniel focused on solving linear equations and modelling real-world scenarios with them, along with annuity and interest calculations in financial mathematics.

In Year 11, Emily worked through Math Methods Unit 1 and 2, tackling polynomials, functions, and the application of quadratic equations using chapter-based exercises.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Josh practiced Further Maths matrices modules—transposing matrices and interpreting networks—and reviewed past exam papers to strengthen problem-solving speed and accuracy under timed conditions.

Recent Challenges

Several students in both primary and secondary years relied heavily on calculators or online modules instead of practicing key maths operations by hand, especially with algebra and negative numbers.

For example, one Year 8 student was encouraged to "do more pen and paper practice rather than relying on Math Pathway modules" after missing steps in factorization exercises.

In VCE Maths Methods, another student's messy working made it hard to spot errors before tests—"a dedicated workbook to write the steps in detail" was suggested for clarity. This sometimes led to extra time spent retracing unclear calculations during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Point Cook tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after weeks of mixing up steps, is now carefully listing every stage of advanced algebra factorisation before checking answers—he'd previously skipped straight to solutions and made small errors.

A Year 12 student has started timing herself on statistics extended-response questions; she used to get stuck for ages but now completes each in under fifteen minutes, which is a real change in her exam readiness.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who often guessed at tricky spellings now points out when she's unsure and asks for help spelling new words aloud during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Point Cook Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lumen Christi School.
