I believe a good tutor is able to maintain a healthy relationship with their student so they can comfortably ask questions and receive help. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build up their confidence on their struggling areas by appropriately teaching them with patience and efficiency. A tutor should be both a friend and…

A good tutor should not only teach content, but also encourage critical thinking and effective study habits. My strengths are patience, clear communication, and adaptability. One of the most important things is to ensure that a tutor is able to make the student comfortable during the lesson. Working in a suitable environment allows the student to perform at a higher performance. This includes bonding with the student and encouraging them whenever possible, providing positive reinforcement. Another important thing is…

I believe tutors pass on a sense of confidence to their students as they develop their skills. It is that virtue that students bring back to their classroom ready to apply what they have learned during their tutor's session. Patience is a key value that I possess and that will make me succeed in this role. Acknowledging that different student…

Every student is a unique equation, and as a tutor, I thrive on the thrill of cracking the code to each individual's learning style. It's not just about being enthusiastic; it's about being a learning chameleon, adapting colors and strategies to fit the distinctive needs of each student. I listen—really listen—to what they're looking for, and…

I think a tutor's role goes beyond simply offering solutions to problems; instead, they should steer students towards finding answers and ensure a solid grasp of the required steps. Additionally, adaptability is crucial, as teaching methods should be flexible to accommodate diverse learning styles. A tutor ought to be non-judgmental, patient, and…

Apart from only teaching the textbook content, I like to counsel them as to the importance of education and how its going to help them in the future by encouraging them to do better. Tutors need to give the students a short break of about 5-10 mins in between so that they don't get over worked, as the situation demands. Both of this helps the…

I opine that understanding the IQ and how to upgrade it is the key responsibility of a mentor. It is also imperative that a tutor should be patient if a child is not understanding a question and try to explore new ways to make it clear. I am very loving and patient as I know kids take time to understand the key concepts. Non-judgemental is the key…

The most important thing is that a tutor recognises a student as an individual; addressing areas where a student has little confidence while offering lifelong learning strategies. At a practical level, this includes…

Inside Regents ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Tom worked through algebraic techniques such as expanding and simplifying by factorising expressions, along with revision of indices and powers of zero.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Olivia focused on coordinate geometry by finding gradients between points and revising congruency proofs using triangles.

For Year 10, Ethan completed lessons on surds—including rationalising denominators—and practiced applying index laws to simplify complex expressions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3 and 4 maths, some students often relied on mental calculations rather than writing out working; as one tutor observed, "he needs to practice doing his working out on paper rather than in his head." This habit made it harder to catch small errors with fractions and perimeter.

By Year 7, a pattern emerged: homework was sometimes incomplete or rushed, limiting feedback opportunities—"I would like to see his homework completed with more effort… there were quite a few errors that could have been due to lack of understanding or rushing."

In senior years (Year 10/11), confidence issues became pronounced during multi-step algebra and trigonometry problems. Students hesitated when unfamiliar questions arose, doubting their abilities even after correct answers. This hesitation led to missed marks under exam pressure, especially when layout was messy or shortcuts were taken in working—forcing time-consuming backtracking mid-test.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Regents Park noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through algebra now taking extra care with each step—he's started writing out his full working and catching mistakes himself.

Another high schooler recently surprised herself by walking the tutor through a challenging probability problem aloud, a big change from her earlier hesitation to explain her thinking.

In primary, one student who always guessed at perimeter questions was able to calculate the perimeter independently for the first time this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Regents Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Regents Park Public School.
