The most important things a tutor can do are build a student’s confidence, provide clear explanations, and create a supportive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. It’s also key to help them develop problem-solving skills and a growth mindset for future challenges I think my strengths as a tutor lie in…

The most important thing a tutor can provide to a student is their time. It goes without saying that all children are different and learn through alternative ways/modes. Patience, perseverance and continual tailored support from a tutor is crucial in allowing a student to understand certain concepts. By having a tutor that is continually readily…

In my opinion the most important things a tutor can offer a student is confidence and guidance. This is because as a tutor, building a student's confidence can directly impact their attitude towards learning and how well they can achieve the marks they are aiming for. Similarly, by giving guidance to a student, not only prompts them into learning…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to believe in them and show encouragement. Self-esteem can be extremely vulnerable during schooling years, and tutors have the power to enhance their students' level of self-confidence and sense of self-efficacy. When I believe in their potential, work with their strengths, support their…

As tutoring gives a more face to face approach, a tutor can do more than a teacher on some occasions for a student as they give more individual focus on each student's weakness and strengths. The most important thing I can do for a student is giving them the time, knowledge and hands-on approach others who cannot do that for them. Tutoring can…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student’s confidence in their own ability. It's not just about getting the right answer, but helping them understand how to approach problems and trust their thinking. Ultimately, a tutor must teach his/her student to be able to rely on themselves and think autonomously when problem solving i.e. not to be afraid of trial and error. I would say my strengths are attributes such as patience with the student (repetition when necessary), determination in getting the message across, and a friendly attitude towards all…

Inside RevesbyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Nicholas worked through factorisation techniques, including perfect squares and difference of two squares, and also practised simplifying algebraic fractions using his homework as a base.

For Year 9, Amy focused on indices—specifically zero and negative indices—and tackled more complex index problems by reversing steps to find missing values.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lily concentrated on financial mathematics, calculating simple and compound interest scenarios and comparing investment options to strengthen her understanding of real-world money management.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often avoided writing out full solutions in algebra, preferring to "do it in my head," which led to missed sign errors and made it harder to check where mistakes happened.

In a recent Year 11 session, a tutor noted, "she rarely attempted past paper questions at home," meaning unfamiliar question types still caused stress under exam timing.

A Year 4 learner left many fraction problems unfinished because she felt unsure about the steps and didn't refer back to her notes as suggested.

When feedback was offered on trigonometry (Year 10), not all corrections were applied before moving on, so similar misunderstandings reappeared next week.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Revesby noticed a big shift with one high school student who used to stay quiet when confused—now, he actively asks questions and even talks through problems aloud to clarify his thinking.

Another older student made real headway in identifying her own mistakes while solving equations; she was able to spot errors before the tutor stepped in, which hadn't happened previously.

For a younger student, consistent practice with times tables paid off: she's now recalling them quickly without prompts and volunteered to try extra multiplication challenges at the end of her session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Padstow Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Luke's Catholic Primary School.
