Providing a student with the fundamental skills they need to persevere and be confident in their own ability to achieve. A good tutor should be personable, responsible and articulate and employ methods of teaching that best suit a particular student. I explain difficult concepts as simply as I can and break it down so it's easier to understand.…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to guide and expand their worldview. To adopt new perspectives regarding politics, literature and sociology. I believe it is important to help students possess the ability to think critically, assert viewpoints and convey one's thoughts through various modes of writing and…

For me, it's super important for a tutor to keep the lesson interactive and somewhat interesting, as interest fuels motivation. However, it's important not to forget that repetition is key in learning and retaining information. Certain math concepts need to be repeated to engrain into memory. Essays and writing styles have to be written repeatedly…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is work with the student at their own pace and find ways that work best for them. It allows for them to not feel rushed and be able to take their time and not feel silly. I like to interact with children. I am a dedicated worker and love to be organized. I believe that the purpose of a tutor is to tailor their teaching as closely as possible to the needs of every individual student; tutors should never take a one-size fits all approach to teaching. Whether that be addressing specific areas of weakness, or adopting a particular teaching style, every student has their own unique needs and ways of…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is never let them lose their confidence and motivation. Before assessments most students are their worst enemy, stressing themselves out to the point in which they forget everything they have learned. I too have done this and know it comes from a lack of confidence. Therefore, it is…

In my opinion it is extremely important to ensure the learner knows that it is safe to not succeed at first as learning is a process full of unsuccessful attempts. This will allow students to participate fearlessly in a tutoring session. Building that trust and relationship with students is an integral part of tutoring. It will enable students to…

I believe that every individual learns things in different ways. In a classroom, each teacher will have their own way of presenting and teaching the content, and this method is most likely to be consistent throughout the year. Whilst this may cater for some students, and help them excel in the particular subject, it might not be suitable for other…

Danielle, Rochedale South

Inside Rochedale SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alice practised adding and subtracting fractions with both like and unlike denominators, as well as converting improper fractions to mixed numbers.

In Year 9, Jack focused on algebraic skills including simplifying, factorising, and performing operations on expressions in preparation for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah tackled financial maths by working through problems involving simple interest calculations and using real-life scenarios such as credit card purchases.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, a student often left reports unfinished or with unclear structure; "report needs to be written up in a proper structure," one tutor noted.

In Year 8, another arrived unprepared—without a notebook or working calculator—which slowed the start of geometry lessons.

A Year 10 learner frequently practised only familiar textbook questions at home, missing out on harder problem-solving types and leaving gaps when tackling quadratic equations by completing the square.

One primary student hesitated to show working for surface area problems, sometimes erasing mistakes rather than correcting them—making it difficult to track their thinking mid-lesson.

Recent Achievements

A Rochedale South tutor noted that a Year 11 student, who previously relied on memorising steps for equations, learned to set up and solve problems independently using proper methods—a real shift in approach.

Another high school student not only completed all revision materials but also corrected common mistakes in compound interest, showing greater care and accuracy than before.

Meanwhile, a primary student who often lost focus managed to stay engaged throughout the session and eagerly used props to understand 3D shapes in 2D drawings. The lesson finished with her confidently explaining how she solved the worksheet questions out loud.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Logan North Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peter's Primary School.
