Communicate, as I believe the reason most student turn to tutoring services is due to a lack of proper communication from usual teachers leading to them misunderstanding or lacking knowledge in certain areas of a subject. I believe it is important for a tutor to communicate properly to make the student feel safe and also to allow for deeper…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to ask lots of questions, and be a mentor on top of being a tutor. I'm meticulous in my teaching approach, being an advocate for deeper understanding of topics. I always explain concepts step by step (derivations and proofs where necessary), and make sure that students…

A tutor should provide clear explanations, offer encouragement, and help the student develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Ultimately,…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allow the student to see that they are so much more than their grades, but also giving them the tools they need to succeed academically, because at the end of the day, their grades will play a big part in the options they will have for future studies. I feel my biggest strength would be my…

A tutors most important role is to support and empower students in their learning journey. Beyond just explaining concepts, a tutor should help build students confidence, foster independent thinking, and create a positive and encouraging learning environment. It's crucial to adapt to each students unique needs, provide clear guidance, and make…

What do you consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student? Making sure that all of my student's questions are answered before the end of the lesson is one of the most important things in tutoring in my opinion. Asking question is the best way of learning and therefore answering question is the best way of teaching.…

Encouragement and being able to explain concepts in a digestible manner are what makes a good tutor, but a great tutor checks in on students to make sure that they are thriving. It takes courage and self-reflection to find a tutor in the first place, so the least a tutor can do is make sure to give the tools for a student to make it on their…

Motivating them is probably the most important, as students can be brilliant but fall behind quickly if they do not have the drive to improve. I think that a tutor also needs to have multiple different ways of approaching a question as a student might not be able to grasp a particular one. Furthermore, I believe that generically working through…

I would consider skills such as organisation, critical thinking and problem solving strategies to be the most valuable takeaways for the student, especially since the skills will always be useful long-term. I also think a tutor should be able to build up their student's growth mindset, giving the students the mentality and confidence to grow even…

Build their confidence as much as their knowledge because a lot of students struggle not because they are incapable, but because they are convinced themselves they can’t do it. Beyond that, I think it’s important to teach a student how to think through a problem rather than just giving them the answer. The goal is to make them capable enough…

The tutor should be reliable, and help them unleash their potential. Students should learn that they are able to do things on their own, hence a tutor should also be encouraging. It is so important for tutors to adapt their method of teaching to the way the student learns. Every student not only has different needs and difficulties, but learns concepts differently. It is extremely important to regularly re-evaluate the student's objectives. Modifying your approach as a tutor to make the student feel comfortable and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is provide a learning environment free from both the rigid structure and inherent judgement present in centres of mass education. A calmer, more personal environment allows the establishment of time tables and study plans more conducive to the individual student. There is also…

To help a student walk the right path that he/she desires. A tutor should understand a students passion and dream and help them achieve this dream. Easy to contact and arrange fist lesson. My sons tutor Teresa is reliable and has excellent communication skills and knowledge for year 11 and 12 extension math. My sons grades improved dramatically when we started tutoring and he now has good study habits and is able to review his work and confidently check his answers. Our experience has be excellent.
Michelle, Rose Bay

Inside Rose BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Lukas focused on finding the equation of a line, including determining gradients and y-intercepts, and practiced sketching parabolas by identifying turning points and intercepts.

Year 10 student tackled simultaneous equations as well as factorising quadratics using grouping and difference of squares strategies, working through targeted textbook problems.

For a primary school student in Year 4, recent sessions concentrated on fractions—covering addition, subtraction, multiplication and division—and converting between decimals and fractions with practical examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, a student arrived unprepared for lessons and often forgot required materials, leading to missed opportunities for feedback on financial math practice. As one tutor observed, "he did not bring the past papers that I had previously given him."

Another Year 10 student showed signs of frustration when unsure how to approach multi-step worded problems—this led to avoidance of more challenging revision tasks and repeated confusion over which methods to use.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner's tendency to count out times tables instead of recalling them from memory slowed progress in fraction conversions, especially during timed activities.

Recent Achievements

One Rose Bay tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with trig problems now confidently writes out all his working for each question, even tackling non-right angled triangles on his own.

Another high schooler made a clear shift by arriving with all homework finished and identifying where he needed extra help, leading him to solve simultaneous equations independently after some guided practice.

In Year 5, a student who previously mixed up the order of months can now recite them without hesitation and completed multi-digit subtraction questions accurately in one sitting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Double Bay Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like McAuley Catholic Primary School.
