Challenge · Reassure · Consolidate A tutor's most integral role is to harness the power of these 3 pillars of tutoring to establish a nurturing learning environment where students are encouraged to think innovatively and step out of their comfort zone. Tutor's must also engage with students to ensure their learning needs are being met and…

As said previously, it is important to support a student academically and aim to encourage them to reach their full potential. However it is also important to create a safe and supportive environment where they will thrive and hopefully enjoy coming to tutoring. Positive reinforcement and targeted support are just examples of ways to acknowledge…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is serve as a secondary teacher/mentor to a school teacher. As school teachers have to focus on a large class (usually around 30 students), they are unable to address the needs of each student. As each student has their own struggles and needs, an exterior tutor provides…

The most important thing a tutor could do for a student is to understand how that student thinks and how they interpret ideas. Doing this is fundamental in allowing the student to interpret ideas more efficiently. I think my strengths as a tutor is my ability to explain ideas to different people and simplify complex ideas. Furthermore I can adjust…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make learning entertaining and memorable. As a recent HS graduate I understand the importance of active teaching rather than reading information off of a white board, thus I know that making information consumption digestible and memorable for students is incredibly important. As a recent…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to never give up on them. I am confident that everyone has the ability to achieve great results given the right amount of effort and proper guidance. It is esesntial for any tutor to always remain patient and explain a concept as many times as required until the student themselves feel…

Just being there for them. It's not always about making sure they stay up to date with their homework. Students get burnt out as we do and it is important to show them kindness and attentiveness when they're feeling down and unmotivated. Communication, empathy, and my diligence in going out of my way to ensure that my students understand what…

The most important thing a tutor can do is encourage a positive culture of wanting to learn and evoking a love of education. This allows students to go beyond the classroom and achieve their best. My strengths would be that I was once one of those petty children who hated my teachers and thought being cool meant not doing my homework, getting…

I believe a tutor can offer a student so much more that just knowledge; the encouragement of a tutor can unlock a student’s potential and lead them towards consistent success. Tutoring sessions can make a student feel heard and understood which is so important in a student’s journey through self discovery in their schooling years. As a tutor,…

A tutor must adapt their teaching style depending on the behaviours and learning style of the student to assist them in learning. A tutor must also make the subject engaging but focussed to discipline and improve the student's passion. Additionally, a tutor must be observant and have critical thinking to analyse exactly where a student struggles…

Patience and motivation are the main elements that are important as a tutor. As tutoring may be an outside source of school that is not compulsory, it is important to be able to push the students to revise on their work and properly understand their content to a higher level. Tutors are to act patient and as a role model for their students,…

One important thing a tutor can do is clearly understand what a student wants with their tutor. For example, if a student already know concepts really well, a tutor should be able to identify this and spend more time on areas where a student may struggle. Furthermore, it is important to consider the student first and foremost. A tutor should be…

Inside SadleirTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ariana reviewed angle relationships and probability by working through her recent school exam paper, and was also randomly tested on square roots to strengthen recall.

In Year 8, Zac focused on solving one-step algebraic equations from worded problems and practiced long division with remainders, revisiting questions he found challenging in homework.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Daniel explored polynomials and graphing functions, using worked examples to clarify how changes in equations affect their graphs.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 maths, Ariana's homework was often incomplete or left unanswered, especially when it covered multiple topics.

During lessons, she relied on memory instead of writing out full working—her long division solutions were correct but "her working out is confusing and may not be accepted by her classroom teacher."

In algebra and probability revision for exams, lost notes and disorganized materials made it difficult to revisit key concepts.

When faced with setbacks or mistakes in equations, she grew discouraged and found it hard to regain confidence, sometimes responding with "I can't" before attempting a problem again.

Recent Achievements

One Sadleir tutor noticed a big change in a Year 8 student who used to rely on prompts for long division but now solves questions independently, even choosing her own method instead of the usual steps.

In another session, a Year 11 student showed new initiative by reviewing his physics mistakes from a recent exam and could clearly explain what went wrong—something he hesitated to do before.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who often guessed at answers has started saying each maths step out loud as he works, helping him catch errors himself and finish his worksheet without any corrections needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Miller Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Therese Catholic Primary School.
