I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel safe to be wrong. So many students disengage from learning because they're afraid of making mistakes or looking unintelligent. Once that fear is removed, real learning can happen. Beyond that, I think a tutor should personalise every session understanding where the student is…

A tutor can certainly change a child's mindset towards any subject because it all depends on making the basics of a subject strong so that there is no further problem. i must mention that I personally believe that there is no such thing as a silly question, so whatever doubts a student might face even if he assumes it to be silly, I am always…

A good tutor can make the students love the subject. when they love it they practice it more, this makes them confident and thus, they love it more. All this results automatically in their improved grades. I plan my class to make it more interesting and easy. I would correlate the concepts with their real-life uses and try to make the concepts…

Primarily, a tutor needs to be a good listener. Listen the problems of an individual carefully and provide the solution. Tutor can be a mentor not only of the academic but can be a mentor of other emotional and mental problems. Patience is the baby step to become an effective tutor. Teaching the content and helping them fully grasp it, rather than doing it for them. I find that a lot of subjects have a particular rhythm to them; although some require rote learning (like particular concepts, especially within math), there are always patterns that can be identified so that students achieve their very best. For example: Stage 2…

A tutor needs to help identify a student's strong points and motivate the students in every possible way. It's not always the tutor that should be valued and respected but the students also needs the same respect and care. I believe a tutor should be like a friend who explains things without judgment and is patient when a student is struggling. Sometimes students just need someone who will listen, encourage them, and explain a concept as many times as necessary until it makes sense. A good tutor helps students feel supported, builds their confidence, and teaches…

Give moral support and guidance. As a tutor, I don't give answers or solve the student's work, I want them to be able to solve it themselves and use their critical thinking skills with their knowledge of subject content. Subjects can be tough, as a tutor, I need to find ways to convey the same subject in an easier, convenient way to understand it.…

I believe that in order for anyone to understand the material being taught - the tutor must begin with the fundamentals and basics; breaking down the information and then ensuring the student is able to explain it back is what I believe works best. This requires patience, which I believe is an essential quality a tutor must maintain in order for…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them. Students already have bounds of pressure heaped on them, academic, parental, administrative, personal, etc. and sometimes all it takes is one Calculus question to bring them to their wit's end. A tutor must support their students throughout their learning journey and…

Inside Salisbury EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Jayden focused on calculating discounts with money and revising key algebra concepts, working through real-world examples.

In Year 7, Olivia practiced area and perimeter calculations using a variety of shapes and also completed extra questions on coordinate geometry to support her class assessment.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Marcus tackled trigonometry homework—solving for unknown sides in triangles—and reviewed how to convert between mixed and proper fractions during revision sessions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4 maths, she forgot to do her homework, which meant she arrived unsure about clock content and needed extra time revisiting basics.

For a Year 7 student, confusion over rearranging formulae led to repeated requests for help on problems already covered—needed a lot more assistance than anticipated.

A Year 10 learner tackling algebra skipped showing steps, resulting in forgotten methods and growing frustration when answers didn't match.

One Year 6 student underestimated their ability and hesitated to attempt questions independently after small setbacks. The knock-on effect: progress slowed as energy shifted from learning new skills to patching old gaps.

Recent Achievements

A Salisbury East tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who had previously struggled with rearranging algebraic formulae now tackling them more independently, only needing minimal prompts to spot and fix errors.

In a Year 7 session, a student who used to wait for step-by-step help now completes homework with much less assistance, showing initiative by correcting mistakes on her own.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students has moved from confusion about reading clocks to confidently solving time problems like "5:45 to 8:15" without hesitation—something she couldn't do just a few weeks ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Para Hills Community Hub Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Keller Road Primary School.
