A tutor or teacher has to show passion/enthusiasm/excitement for the subject(s) they teach to their students, students learn best in subjects they are interested/excited about, you cannot expect a student to be interested & do well in a subject if even the person teaching them the subject isn't interested in the subject. Enthusiasm and passion…

To be honest. Also, take the time to really understand the student and learn how they learn best, and utilise this knowledge to the best of my ability. Lastly, to make sure that the student is prepared for tests and exams, and provide them with all the resources possible to help them succeed outside of tutoring times. My strengths as a tutor…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do is to not just provide their students with an answer but to guide the student through the process. As the saying goes "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" helping a student understand the thought process helps them consolidate…

I believe it is important to build strong connections with the students, enabling the learning to be truly personalised where the tutor can teach to the student's strengths. I am very flexible and able to adapt to the learning style of each student to best suit their needs. This may include how we approach content or explaining it in other ways…

Many students currently find learning, especially in subjects such as maths, to be an intimidating and nerve-wracking experience. The best thing a tutor could do for a student is to change this mindset, allowing them to view learning and school in general as a more enjoyable and interesting experience. I also believe that being a dependable…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is to motivate the students to learn and explore new ideas.Every individual is different with different types of weakness and strengths in academics. Identifying or anticipating these as well as the most common problems that students face is very important. Also, getting their feedback, being…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is boost their confidence and provide them with a safe space to increase their understanding in their own pace without feeling any kind of judgement. I feel that I am highly approachable and will be able to establish a healthy relationship to those I tutor, providing them with a safe space to…

Spending time and resources on improving myself so that the I as a tutor can make the student understand better. Being honest, patient and a good listener adds up to it. Also a tutor needs to be confident enough to make the student reach the goal. I am patient enough to listen and understand what the student want to say and where he/she might be…

Inside SeabrookTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Emily worked through probability questions and tackled algebra and indices practice, focusing on using step-by-step examples to clarify each process.

In Year 10, Sam focused on quadratic equations—solving and graphing them—and explored higher degree polynomials with a mix of written solutions and calculator checks.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ava concentrated on differentiation in calculus and completed SAC revision sessions targeting trigonometry problems from recent class assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student relied heavily on their CAS calculator for differentiation tasks—"needs to recall formulas without prompts," noted the tutor—which led to hesitation when calculators weren't allowed.

In Year 9, skipping careful reading of probability questions resulted in misinterpreted instructions and incomplete answers.

For a Year 7 student, messy fraction working made it difficult to spot where errors had crept in; lines were crowded, so mistakes went unnoticed until reviewing.

One senior student glossed over multi-step algebra problems, confident in their understanding, but this habit meant missing key simplification steps and redoing work under time pressure during tests.

Recent Achievements

One Seabrook tutor noticed a big change in a Year 11 student who previously mixed up the product and chain rules in calculus; now, she not only distinguishes between them but can apply both when solving derivative problems.

A Year 9 student, after weeks of hesitating on algebra basics, started tackling basic algebra questions without prompting—she even attempted a few challenging worded equations for the first time.

Meanwhile, another high schooler who struggled with binomial probability questions last term managed to answer almost every question on his recent practice SAC independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Altona Meadows Library and Learning Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Seabrook Primary School.
