Identifying the student's strengths and weaknesses is crucial. I would ensure their strengths are reflected through their work and that we are spending extra time focusing on the weaker areas. As a tutor, you act as the student's moral support, as the subjects they are receiving tutoring for are the subjects they find the most challenging. You are…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to empower the individual to believe they can do it. This requires inspiring growth and motivation, as you cannot force someone to learn but only encourage one to try their best. To me, a student's best is always something to be celebrated and from here, I provide support and aid when the…

Desak, Seaton

Inside SeatonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lily revised area and perimeter in maths and practised reading comprehension with factual articles.

Year 8 student Sarah focused on switching between fractions, decimals, and percentages using real-life examples, then reviewed prime and composite numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Marcus tackled algebraic equations—including expanding and factorising—and worked through problems involving BEDMAS and the cartesian plane for revision ahead of his next assessment.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student tended to avoid writing out working in algebra, preferring mental calculation; as a tutor noted, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In a senior Maths session, one student confused area and volume formulae when tackling compound shape problems—this made it harder to spot where the extra dimension (height) was needed.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 learner sometimes relied on prompts rather than independently noting key observations in science reports, resulting in less detailed notes. This led to extra time spent revisiting concepts that could have been recorded more clearly during lessons.

Recent Achievements

A Seaton tutor recently noticed a Year 8 student who had always hesitated to speak up now comfortably asking for help when stuck, especially with new algebra problems—previously, she'd just guess and move on.

In a high school session, another student who'd struggled to organise his maths assignments began showing all working out and double-checking his answers independently before moving forward.

Meanwhile, a senior student tackling calculus was able not only to apply the product rule accurately but also talked through each step out loud, demonstrating clear understanding after needing lots of prompting in earlier lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Riverstone Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Seaton Park Primary School.
