Being supportive and patient because it can be difficult for a tutor to see how hard the high school level maths can be for the student. Tutors need to remember how they did when they did the same maths years ago for their HSC/school and how difficult it was back then as opposed to how simple it seems now. As a maths tutor, I understand how…

To be able to enable to student to think, and answer hard questions when all else has failed. A tutor shouldn't teach a student but rather guide them to asking the right questions and figuring out the right paths to take in order to get the information that they need. I have only recently finished school, this allows me insight to a more updated…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is be able to get them back in the right direction when they are lost. To give the student the tools and knowledge to be able to further their own learning. My strengths as a tutor in particular are my versatility. Studying my second course I have obtained strong skills as well as a variety…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student in Mathematics is to help the student develop a solid understanding of the concept or method, from which the student can learn to solve the basic problems, then extend to solve more complex problems. My main strengths are my friendly and open-to-question demeanor, and also my knowledge of the…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, tailor lessons to their unique needs, and foster a genuine understanding of the subject. Be patient, understanding, and be encouraging! High school is not an easy thing, not just because of what you're learning but also because life must go on outside of school. University students face the same problem, so we know that not all days are great days. So as a tutor, you need to be supportive of your student where necessary, so that when…

Being able to explain concepts well to a student is arguably the most important thing. The best tutors are those who can explain and teach challenging ideas with relative ease in a short period of time because they have such good interpersonal skills. I believe my greatest strength is personal interaction with the student, and the ability to…

I believe helping a student be able to grow academically within themselves and helping them understand how they learn is the most important thing I can do for a student. Since students most commonly get tutoring as they do not understand the approach taken by their teacher to the subject, I believe the most important thing is to relate to the student, and see the problem from their perspective. This leads to the ability to create personalised approaches to the theories presented in class, and allow the student to…

One of the most important effects a tutor can have on a student is bringing out their confidence and have their student feel supported. Throughout my experience as a tutor, many students have said "I'm stupid" and this falsehood is holding them back. They lack confidence in exams and don't exercise sufficient effort for assignments, because they…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire passion; a person who is sincerely interested in a subject and has a drive to continue delving into it will naturally go much further and achieve much higher then an unmotivated genius no matter the intellect as they will enjoy the entire journey of learning and not just focus on the results. I…

I think most importantly a tutor should teach the student how to learn. Other than having a passion and knowledge of the material; I think it's also important to be a good listener and be able to pick up whether the student really understands, tailoring your approach to the student. It is vital for a tutor to provide the skills and techniques required to solve complex problems rather than teaching them how to solve these problems. Getting a student excited about learning is also pivotal as this provides a more engaging environment and increases their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think and learn. This is far more valuable for future work and study than any one topic to be learnt. A tutor should be more than someone who lectures and instead be someone who brings value through listening and understanding challenges and working through them with the student to find solutions. As previously mentioned, I think the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to listen. If you do not listen to the students expectations and responsiveness to the material then the sessions will not be productive, and the student will not improve. My strengths are that I am an incredibly patient tutor, as well as a good listener.…

Inside SherwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Oscar worked on recognising and using homophones versus homographs, and improved reading comprehension skills by analysing a historical text.

Year 8 student Jakob focused on writing body paragraphs for his English speech, including developing topic sentences and refining paragraph structure.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student explored percentages, fractions, and decimals—particularly finding the percentage of a whole number both directly and in reverse—while practising careful reading of multi-step maths questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student left several homework tasks incomplete and struggled to recall material from the previous week, making it difficult to build on new concepts. "She could have some specific questions she had trouble with throughout the previous week ready, if she wanted to," a tutor observed.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student often guessed answers in problem-solving rather than writing out logical steps—this led to repeated mistakes in algebra that weren't spotted until feedback was given.

Another senior student forgot key materials for lessons and did not always bring completed assignments for review, slowing progress on targeted skills.

Recent Achievements

One Sherwood tutor noticed a big shift in Year 10 student Jakob, who started openly discussing essay feedback and even suggested his own improvements—whereas he used to just listen quietly.

In a recent session, Ethan (Year 7) completed all his homework before the lesson and was able to correct mistakes in his story draft on his own, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, Isabelle in Year 4 has become much more focused during maths lessons; she now confidently explains her jump and split strategies out loud and even taught them back to the tutor last week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sherwood State School.
