I think to provide a larger framework or paradigm for what they are learning. When something fits into a context for "why" they are learning a concept. Mainly being able to listen to the student. I think I'm enthusiastic about getting to know them and what they care about, which helps me teach. Rather than just trying to do a…

Being understanding, confident and respectful are key aspects in a biology tutor- student relationship. These three qualities ensure the reliability and integrity of the tutor. I also believe that showing my students I'm not always right is a good skill to teach (mostly these mistakes are unintentional). It is the manner in which one amends one's…

It's also essential to foster a growth mindset, helping students understand that challenges are opportunities for learning rather than obstacles. Moreover, a biology tutor should be a mentor, guiding students toward…

The most important thing or a challenge for a biology tutor is to involve a student in a subject not just for it's technicality but for its application in real life. Therefore it's important to find the bridge between what you study and real life in not all but most cases to keep studies interesting. If not, find a funny way or create a situation…

Inside SkyeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alexandra focused on solving linear equations and worked through basic algebra skills such as using in-and-out tables to introduce variables.

Year 9 student reviewed index laws and practiced expanding binomial products as part of their study on quadratics, using step-by-step written examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student tackled trigonometric ratios alongside the Pythagorean theorem, applying these concepts to triangle problems with real-world measurement contexts.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was a challenge for one Year 9 student, with notes highlighting, "The homework I assigned that was due this week was not completed."

In Year 11 algebra, working out steps were often skipped or written messily, making it difficult to check answers and causing marks to be lost. As noted in another case, "Needs to make his working out clear to gain full marks."

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student avoided showing calculations for double-digit addition and instead guessed answers until prompted. This led to confusion during more complex problems and time spent backtracking rather than progressing confidently.

Recent Achievements

One Skye tutor noticed a big change in a Year 8 student who used to avoid asking for help—she now puts her hand up as soon as she's stuck on algebraic equations, which has sped up her progress.

In a recent high school session, another student worked through an entire set of geometry problems independently and managed to apply the correct formulas without any reminders, something he previously needed step-by-step guidance for.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once hesitated with times tables has started quizzing the tutor back using his own multiplication game idea.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carrum Downs Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Skye Primary School.
