The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being able to help students understand concepts clearly. In addition, when a student is confused on a topic, it is the tutor's role not to simply provide them with the answer, but to guide them, so that the student can come to the solution by themselves. Helping students break down problems…

Making sure that the student fully understands what was taught is the most important above all. A tutor should not just present a lesson and slip away. He should be more interactive, address the questions of the student, and give his best effort to repeat the parts not understood by the student in other simpler smart approaches. A tutor should…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make the student understand in a easy and comfortable way, even if the tutor has to repeat it so many times for them. Another important thing is that all children should not be left behind, as I tutor, he/she should move together at the pace of students and that no one should be left out.…

A tutor should have a great deal of empathy to be able to understand what the student is going through in order to understand why they are experiencing difficulties to help them solve a problem. I am understanding and empathetic which allows me to figure out if and why a student may not comprehend a concept. I am also a quick learner and can…

There are various ways a tutor is able to help students. A good tutor should always teach the student different styles of learning which allows the students to have a different perspective on their studies. A tutor should be a mentor. They are someone who can guide a student and give real advice. This means they are approachable in and beyond the classroom setting. Being interactive is another must. The student should be solving the problems simply with the tutor's guidance. Tutors must also encourage the student to feel comfortable asking questions…

I don't believe that the most important things that a tutor can do for a student start in the classroom. The most important thing in achieving desired outcomes in school, or any discipline, is attitude. It starts with understanding that a whole is made up of parts, and that ten minutes a day, although small, adds up over the course of three…

In my opinion, the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to acknowledge the students intelligence. Einstein said it best himself "Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." And now we are learning more and more that there are multiple teaching styles…

A tutor can make the learning process easy and enjoyable. Tutor may provide a personalized learning experience, which can be better than what books can do. Tutor can attend to the concerns and weak areas of each student and help them to master difficult concepts. A tutor can guide the student for learning beyond the immediate subject requirements.…

Inside SmithfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Andrew focused on different strategies for 2- and 3-digit subtraction, tackled word problems involving working backwards, and explored the length topic by comparing units like millimetres, centimetres, and metres.

In Year 10, Judy revised solving algebraic equations with brackets on both sides and worked through algebraic fraction equations using step-by-step examples.

A Year 11 student spent sessions practising financial maths calculations including overtime pay and commission, then moved on to income tax and simple interest using real-world wage scenarios.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion and organization were ongoing concerns across several high school years.

In Year 10, a student admitted to rushing algebraic fractions homework minutes before the session, leaving half unfinished.

Another in Year 11 did not attempt trigonometry homework at all, forgetting key ratios when revisiting material.

Fatigue and lack of focus recurred—"was very tired during this lesson and lost focus multiple times," read one note for a senior maths student struggling with equations previously mastered.

Another Year 9 scenario showed reliance on online answers rather than personal effort.

Gaps in revision habits often left students underprepared for unexpected tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Smithfield recently noticed a Year 8 student who used to hesitate asking for help now openly asks questions when stuck, instead of guessing through his algebra homework.

A high schooler who previously struggled with trigonometric ratios managed to complete his latest homework almost error-free and formatted his answers neatly without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who found number line problems tricky last week was able to independently solve "in between" questions for her current homework.

In one session, a senior student finished all ten equations on the worksheet without repeating earlier mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Smithfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Gertrude's Catholic Primary School.
