I believe it is really important that a biology tutor is able to communicate well, encourage and understand the primary needs of their students. The tutor should then be able to think of many different and useful strategies to help the student learn. It is very important the tutor brings a sense of fun to the lesson, to urge the student to want to…

A high level of communication between the tutor and the student is vital as this allows a positive learning environment to be created, where students feel comfortable asking questions to attain the extra support they require. Tutors must be supportive and provide constant encouragement in order to motivate the student to achieve their best. A…

The most important thing that a biology tutor can do for a student is to be able to fix crucial gaps in a student's knowledge. And consequently, be able to assist the student to achieve full potential in school results. Being patient and understanding that if a student doesn't understand the subject after a few times practicing it, we can always…

I believe that the most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is make them feel welcome and build their confidence by acknowledging their progress no matter how small it is. It is also crucial for a tutor to recognize that everyone learns differently and adapt their teaching styles accordingly. Having finished high school just about…

The most important is to be there and present when students are struggling. To be observe the weaknesses of each students and provide ways of improvement. Be compassionate and patient, ask students if they have understood that particular concept. I'm good listener, ensuring that students are comfortable to tell me when they are unaware of certain…

I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a biology tutor's action, as it is…

Listen. Every student excels in some ways and does not in others. This emphasises the importance for a biology tutor to present ideas in ways which allow the student to learn them in the most efficient and effective ways. This also ensures that the tutor does not repeat anything the student already knows and identifies what the student has yet to…

I think an essential thing a biology tutor can do for their student is be empathetic! Often, for teachers, its hard to understand what students are feeling, since school and lifestyle has changed from the time they were students to now (in a global pandemic). Therefore, being an tutor who displays empathy about understanding what its like being a…

I believe that teaching is not about pumping a student with exam papers or to make them memorise the answers and get good grades, for my satisfaction. But about really making sure the student understands a concept, so that they have a strong foundation and can apply to it many different question styles. This will actively stimulate creativity and…

Inside Somerton ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student James worked through NAPLAN Numeracy practice questions, focusing on relationships between fractions, decimals, and percentages, and understanding key terminology and equivalence.

Year 10 student Finn tackled probability concepts such as events and outcomes before moving on to rates, ratios, and proportions for an upcoming assignment.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex studied the production and transmission of electromagnetic waves in Physics and practiced numerical problem-solving alongside revision of integration techniques in Mathematics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student in Physics mixed up formulas for derivatives and antiderivatives, leading to confusion during problem-solving—"he sometimes mixes up the stuff," noted a tutor.

In Year 11 Maths, forgetting key constants slowed down progress with numericals, while another senior struggled to recall standard deviation and variance formulas in Statistics.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student had trouble correctly labelling headings on the place value board, which made it harder to organise answers.

During reading tasks in Year 3, reluctance to participate meant missed opportunities for practice; one session required repeated prompting just to get started.

Recent Achievements

One Somerton Park tutor noticed James is now solving most maths problems in class after previously needing extra support and even started asking for more challenging questions.

Chloe, also in high school, has moved from hesitating on worded problems to working through them independently during sessions—she recently tackled several ratio questions by herself without prompting.

Meanwhile, in Year 3, Jye used to be quiet and reserved but has begun involving himself fully in lessons and now brings home books to share his spelling lists and writing pieces with real pride.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenelg Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart College - Marcellin Campus.
