The one thing more than anything that a tutor can do is to offer a safe place where students will not be afraid of failure. Then guide them step by step until they understand the concept, and encourage them to carry on even when things get difficult. A good tutor gives confidence and no knowledge. My strength as a tutor will be like 1.Clear…

I think the most important things for a tutor to do is to make sure the student understands how to do the question, and not just give them the answer or formula. It is essential for them to utilise all the skills and I want to foster the ability to identify which methods are required for each question. I like to teach in fun ways so hopefully that…

Firstly, building confidence is crucial, as it helps students believe in their abilities and improves their performance. Individualised learning is also important as tailoring lessons to meet each student's unique needs and learning styles ensures they grasp concepts effectively. I believe tutors need to understand their students, given that not all individuals hold the same skills or pace of learning and as such, need to be taken into consideration or have the lesson plans catered to their needs. Tutors must, nonetheless, put in large amounts of effort to ensure the student receives and understands theory that is taught,…

Instill a deeper understanding and appreciation of the subject. Those are the foundations upon which the rest is built. Strengths: I love kids and I love maths. Teaching to the student's strengths and boosting their confidence in the abilities they lack is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. Understanding the student's strengths is the foremost thing and personalizing the learning experience (by also making it fun) based on these strengths will help the student excel in any subject. I…

A few of the important things a tutor can do for a student is to care, understand and support. Although a tutor may have an incredible breadth of knowledge, it is the way that they deliver this knowledge that is key. Firstly, they need to care and understand the student's level and ability to learn and process information. As much as delivering…

I think the most important thing is not to dump all my knowledge onto a student, but to have them have their own lightbulb moment, and figure out ways and strategies that work for best them. I am able to go at a pace that they are able to adapt to, implement different strategies easily, and I get along with a wide range of people, creating a safe…

An open environment, a student should not feel embaressed when asking questions or having a problem with their school work. This can be a problem sometimes in a classroom environment as some children may riddicule the child. This open environment is important for a tutor as the student should feel open to ask questions without peer judgement. A…

Inside South GranvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Favour reviewed mistakes from the 2020 Western Past Paper and tackled several questions from the 2019 paper, focusing on clarifying tricky concepts.

Year 12 student went through HSC depreciation questions and selected problems from the WME Trial 2023, addressing practical finance calculations.

Another Year 12 student worked on trigonometry with right-angled triangles and bearings, using textbook exercises to build confidence in applying these skills to exam-style scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 English, one student's essays showed frequent repetition and unclear connections between ideas—"he needs to use a greater variety of connectives in his writing"—making responses harder to follow under timed conditions.

In Year 10 Mathematics, a student often left out units in answers and sometimes forgot essential materials for lessons; as noted, "homework and materials should be brought to every lesson."

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner hesitated to attempt more difficult fraction problems, sticking with familiar examples instead of challenging herself. This led to slower improvement on test-style questions requiring deeper understanding.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in South Granville recently noticed a Year 12 student who, after previously missing marks for unclear essay structure, took feedback on board and began rewriting his thesis statements more thoughtfully, even re-reading completed essays for better analysis.

In another session, a high schooler prepping for the HSC started working with friends outside of lessons to prepare quotes and themes—showing much more initiative than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who once hesitated to ask questions now actively seeks help whenever she's unsure about maths problems, instead of guessing or skipping them.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Auburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Blaxcell Street Public School.
