To be honest, an excellent tutor needs to be able to assist students in meeting deadlines. Delivering instruction that gives students the tools they need to be more independent in their studies is as vital, though. I would suggest to my pupils working on abilities in time management, critical thinking, and evaluation. I think that one of my skills…

I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

I feel the most important things a tutor can do: understand the student, make learning fun and clear and build confidence in them. I would first listen to the student, understand where they feel difficult, go along with their pace and make the student do a lot of thinking. This way it would help the student build confidence in them, make concepts…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to first be understanding as each student has different experiences with learning subjects and may also have problems outside of education. Secondly would be to be approachable and appear easy-going so the student will not be intimidated or scared in having learning sessions with you.…

A tutor can change the approach of a student towards a subject- from pessimism to optimism, and make him/her excel in that subject. Understanding- so if a topic is not well understood by the student, I can explain again with a different approach so that the student understands the concept clearly. Patience- I am patient with weak/slow learners,…

I believe that it is through a personalized learning plan with adequate goals set that students can learn effectively. It is also a tutor’s job to foster a positive environment for students and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make him/her comfortable and be a like a friend. It is crucial for a tutor to make the students understand that they are free to ask any doubts or questions without being afraid. I am mostly available out of tuition hours as well via text or call. So I will be there if they have any last…

They should be patient according to the student's needs, while also being accommodating yet pushing them to continue learning to the best of their ability. Most importantly, a tutor needs to make sure the student has a love for learning. Communication skills for all ages, enthusiasm, planning ahead and the ability to adjust lessons to different…

I can be strict or friendly depending on the needs of the student, so each student's experience will be different in order for them to realise…

I see my role as a tutor to guide my students, providing them with the strategies necessary to develop their knowledge and understanding. As a student myself, I…

After the first months of tutoring passed by I noticed that what most students necessitate was a method, a fixed pattern to follow whilst studying. Then, my objective became to teach students how to learn properly: my aim was to assist them in finding their own way of studying and learning. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help a student become confident and independent in their learning. Rather than simply giving them answers, a tutor should help them understand the reasoning behind concepts and develop strategies they can use on their own. It is also important to be patient, recognise each student’s…

I think understanding the student's capacity, strengths, and weaknesses plays a vital role in being a tutor, therefore, the tutor could implement a personalized system for each student. Having compassion. Being proficient in a subject does not guarantee that the student will understand as deeply as the tutor. Sometimes, techniques won't work, or the student may have problems outside of academics. Being compassionate will outweigh any other things that a tutor can do at the end of the day. I am able to compartmentalize well, and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is truly be their well-wisher. I think students are coming to tutors because they know they need help. A tutor is responsible for providing guidance, by leading the way and showing the students that learning does not have to be intimidating and daunting, through their own experience. Moreover, a tutor has to be a motivator, one who serves as a role model and inspires curiosity, so the student is able to reach their full potential. I believe my…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is create a space where the student feels completely comfortable being themselves. They should be able to openly say what they do and don’t understand without fear of judgment. This honesty is what allows us to help them in the best way possible. Beyond that, a tutor should always aim to build…

To be consoling and confident, so that the student believes in you. To have a very good relationship with the student is an important key because it releases the stress on the student-tutor barrier, which is important especially during learning. Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
