While improving grades is important, lasting success comes from helping students genuinely understand concepts rather than memorising procedures. Inspire the student to like the subject, so that in the future, even without a tutor, the student has the initiative to learn things on their own. Also, a tutor needs to make sure the student understand the concepts and not just remember how to solve a math problem without deep understanding. - With the score I have achieved in several Maths…

I believe there are two immensely important things a tutor can do for a student. The first one is developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, so that a student can confidently solve problems that they haven't encountered before or when no one is there to guide them. And the second one is fostering a positive learning environment,…

The most important task as a tutor in my opinioin is to improve their self-efficacy and confidence in their academics. As students, one of the most crucial parts of doing well academically is being confident in themselves. Many students I have worked with before begun tutoring "not liking school work" or "feeling low in confidence" with their…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is help a student build confidence in themselves. It’s not just about getting the right answers, but about helping them understand how to approach problems, how to think critically, and how to stay calm even when something feels difficult. I also think it’s really important to create a space…

Making them understand about a concept, and unleashing their own strengths so that they are able to solve problems on their own. Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
