I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them understand how they learn best and give them the tools to continue to grow and learn beyond what tutoring can give them. I also think that helping build a student's confidence is a very important part of tutoring, both in the subject matter and in their academic…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to foster a supportive and encouraging learning environment and to instill a deep understanding of the subject matter. It's crucial to build confidence in students, helping them to see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow rather than obstacles. A tutor should also strive to make…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to accomodate to their individual needs, ensuring they know that they’re smart and capable of accomplishing their goals, despite their struggles. My experience as a teaching assistant has taught me to be open minded and adaptable, recognising that there is no such thing as a…

Having a personal passion and drive to learn will lead a student to becoming a holistic and proactive learner, guiding their personal growth and conceptualisation of information. When a student fully engages with their education in a healthy and positive manner, the benefits extend beyond the classroom as this attitude can be applied to other…

Rather than provide a mass amount of information, the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is instil a sense of confidence and interest in the subject. Personally the experiences that I have taken with me from systems of education have been how applicable the framework of learning is to other facets of the reasoning process.…

Beyond simply helping a student improve their grades, I believe a tutor should aim to further engage their students in their learning and to actively enjoy school. It's one thing to explain to a student how to approach concepts and assessment tasks, but to actively encourage them to love school is something that separates a good tutor from a…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allowing a student time to try and solve aspects of the problem themselves following proper guidance, instead of hand-holding them the entire way. This helps build critical thinking skills and allows the student to recognise the roots of the question. A tutor should also be understanding of any…

Always being understanding and patient. There are a lot of things that can make a student feel low and not special and as a tutor, we need to play to their strengths instead of the majority. Be understanding and patient. Each student is trying to reach a goal, and as a tutor, I have to help them achieve that goal without taking away their effort. I think I can connect well with students. The most important thing a tutor does for a student is helping them become more confident, so that they have faith in their own abilities and performance. A tutor needs to understand that every student learns differently. Therefore it is important to understand, especially if a tutor has multiple students, that one lesson won't have the same effect on every student. Tutors must adapt to teach students specific details they do not know and in specific ways. I'm proficient at adapting my teaching…

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
