I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

To inspire a student to be curious and develop a love of learning, as people are not often motivated to improve in areas in which they lack passion. The last family I had tutored had told me that after my sessions with their son, he had stopped crying every time he had to complete his school homework. From this experience, I have come to…

A tutor can change the approach of a student towards a subject- from pessimism to optimism, and make him/her excel in that subject. Understanding- so if a topic is not well understood by the student, I can explain again with a different approach so that the student understands the concept clearly. After the first months of tutoring passed by I noticed that what most students necessitate was a method, a fixed pattern to follow whilst studying. Then, my objective became to teach students how to learn properly: my aim was to assist them in finding their own way of studying and learning. A good tutor needs to know the content, but more importantly, they need to identify gaps in the student's understanding, even when the students aren't sure where they're struggling. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is truly be their well-wisher. I think students are coming to tutors because they know they need help. Acknowledging that they took that step, understanding the knowledge base with which they're there, teaching them in easy terms, and creating a long term plan for their studies is the…

A tutor is responsible for providing guidance, by leading the way and showing the students that learning does not have to be intimidating and daunting, through their own experience. Moreover, a tutor has to be a motivator, one who serves as a role model and inspires curiosity, so the student is able to reach their full potential. I believe my…

As each student is unique it is important to assess their level of learning, identify the areas where they are lacking and then provide suitable tutoring. Lee, Southbank

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
