As a tutor, I could assist students to understand their subjects by motivating them involving an interactive class with students. When I went to tutoring, I had the best experience by having a very motivated, interactive and interesting tutor. I will try to become one of them though I'm still yet to gain formal experience of tutoring In addition,…

A tutor should help students develop both understanding and confidence. This means identifying gaps in their knowledge, explaining concepts in a way that suits their learning style, and encouraging them to think independently rather than relying on answers. Building a positive relationship, setting achievable goals, and providing consistent…

A tutor should provide a student a "light-bulb" moment, where they suddenly understand a concept, gain an idea or know how to answer a question. Light-bulb moments allow students to gain confidence in the subject, and thus achieve the goal of a higher mark. I believe it is also important for tutors to provide tips for dealing with stress,…

The most important part of tutoring is to make sure the student grasps a concept entirely and doesn't have any gaps in their knowledge before moving onto new topics. It is essential for students to fully comprehend a difficult concept as this will help them remember it better, gain confidence in the topic and lower their stress. Additionally,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and humble. While certain concepts may come naturally to the tutor, this is not always the case for the student. A good tutor recognizes that each student learns in their own way and at their own pace. Therefore, patience is essential in guiding the student toward…

A step by step technique. It is important that the student is shown the correct way to solve a problem as the student might not have understood the basics of the lesson. When teaching the student, it is important to go through the lesson and make sure the student understands the lesson before commencing with the assignment. It is out job to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to improve their confidence and help them to reach their full potential. In subjects such as math, where continuous practice and thought is necessary, the confidence of the student is very important to their success. Being a source of advice and support in a student's scholarly journey. I am approachable and non-judgemental so students can ask me for help on school topics that they may not want to ask their teachers or parents due to anxiety. I use learning styles that complement the student I am teaching, as opposed to a "one size fits all"…

It's important for a tutor to help a student get the correct answer, but more importantly it is critical that the student understands the concept behind which the answer was based. It is important for a tutor to be able to communicate with the individual in the way which is best suited for the student so that they can efficiently grasp the…

I think a tutor should be capable of answering any questions discussing any uncertainties that a student may have. These should be explained clearly and if the student does not understand initially, the tutor should continue to explain in alternate ways (e.g. rewording sentences and visual aids such as diagrams) until the student understands. In…

Giving motivation, goals and direction. I always loved tutors who could give me a purpose to life on top of knowledge of school content. Equally important is building trust and comfort. I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable and heard. By incorporating small things like checking in…

I think it is most important for a tutor to make the learning experience enjoyable for a student, because in my experience even the worst subject with the most innane course material can be made much better with a tutor that you actually like, that likes the subject, and presents it clearly. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to establish their confidence, give them the attention, teach the most efficient strategies to succeed in the exam with the least lessons. In order to establish a good relationship, the tutor must be an energetic person, someone with a lot of enthusiasm with respect to human interactions. This interest will certainly have a positive impact on a child discouraged by the school and his or her bad grades. Through his or her good mood and motivation, the tutor will be a model for…

The most important things for a tutor is to be a source of support that they can reach out to, not only in the specific subject that they're tutoring, but also studying and school life in general. Inside St IvesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jasmine focused on long division through worded problems and multi-step questions.

In Year 9, Ben worked on applying trigonometric ratios (sin, cos, tan) to find unknown angles and side lengths, as well as tackling coordinate geometry challenges involving harder diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia concentrated on finding x- and y-intercepts of parabolas and determining maximum values on curves using graphing techniques.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, messy written work—particularly in function notation—made it tough to spot errors and track logic, as one tutor noted: "Setting out work neatly and clearly" was a key target.

A Year 11 student revising statistics struggled to apply feedback after calculating the median incorrectly by one position, leading to repeated mistakes with quartiles on homework.

In senior economics, over-reliance on notes during practice questions meant formulas weren't memorised; when asked about opportunity cost or the balance of payments, he needed his sheet every time. This reliance slowed recall under timed conditions.

Recent Achievements

One St Ives tutor recently saw a Year 12 student who used to mix up the different accounts in balance of payments now accurately distinguish between them and explain what causes deficits or surpluses—something he'd struggled with before.

In a Year 10 session, Jasmin, who was previously confused by box and whisker plots, can now confidently calculate quartiles and interpret what they represent in data sets.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who would rush through maths questions is now pausing to read each one carefully before answering, leading to fewer mistakes on their worksheets.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Ives Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School.
