I think teaching students how to be independent is something tutors must do. Prioritizing things like active learning wherein students get to question things themselves, rather than being spoon-fed answers is important. Making them learn that they can find the answers themselves if they put in the effort is important. And obviously creating all…

Try make tutoring fun, students no matter how hard you try will not retain information and be willing to learn if they are really against it. So by presenting the content in a fun but still effective manner, it is bound to show results. The most important thing when it comes to content is to not spoon feed them with the right answers, you need…

- Allow students to understand concepts and encourage curiosity I think as students we often feel that we are forced to learn things and sometimes it feels like labour which make people fear certain concepts. However, I think that as a tutor it is most important to remove that fear because knoweldge is not to be feared but to be known. -…

The most important things as far as I'm considered, are to be readily approachable, and constantly supportive during the entire teaching process. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them skills they can use in life. It's not just about teaching them how to do a single problem, it's how to solve problems down the track. It's also about giving them the confidence in themselves, being confident means they will be less stressed and be able to do their best…

A tutor can increase a student's confidence in their abilities through consolidation of concepts. This is important as to do well in any subject, a student needs to believe in themselves and their capabilities. I am good at going slowly, step by step, through difficult concepts to break them down into understandable…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to encourage him/her to pursue a career in their liking and to empathise with their difficulties and teach them how to overcome them. It is also of utmost importance that a tutor must lower themselves to their understanding to teach a student. Passion to teach and a drive to progress as an…

The most important thing of a tutor in my opinion is to foster genuine passion for learning for the students. I believe that the academic success of any student should be self-paced, and the tutor could only help them if they face a too-challenging problem or cannot come up with a plan to achieve their success. Passion to help students, I…

In general, I believe that the best way to teach Maths/Science is in a way which the student understands the concepts rather than just giving the student a method to produce an answer, which is how these subjects are commonly taught. 1. Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that a tutor should show their students. To be consoling and confident, so that the student believes in you. A teacher needs to be friendly, interactive at the same time authoritarian in a positive way. A teacher cannot do much if a student do not co-operates. A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

Inside St KildaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Matthew focused on complex numbers—proving properties using geometric arguments—and also tackled advanced trial paper questions involving polynomials and mathematical induction.

Year 11 student Amisha worked through the quantum mechanical nature of atoms, applying the Rydberg equation to electron transitions, and practised solving problems on electromagnetic induction.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Will developed essay writing skills by planning comparative responses for Tracks and Into the Wild, with particular attention to analysing language use and connecting key themes such as individualism and materialism.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, a student often skipped showing full working in interest and credit card problems, which made it hard to catch repeated calculation errors; as noted, "small details were missed due to the habit of skimming over the question and jumping straight to the formula."

In senior English, incomplete homework and weak communication about missing work became an issue—one week, no prior notice was given that set tasks hadn't been attempted.

Exam responses also suffered from minimal essay planning, leading to answers drifting off-topic.

In Extension Maths, forgetting previous feedback meant similar mistakes kept resurfacing during timed proof questions.

Recent Achievements

One St Kilda tutor noticed that Will, a Year 12 English student, has begun to independently spot and explain his own writing errors—something he previously struggled with—and now takes initiative to backcheck his essays before submitting.

In another recent high school session, Amisha made a breakthrough in physics by correctly solving a projectile motion problem using methods she'd found confusing just weeks ago, and her improved test score reflected the shift.

Meanwhile, a younger student showed new engagement by describing themes for class novels out loud after previously being hesitant to share ideas during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yesodei HaTorah College.
