The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make him/her comfortable and be a like a friend. It is crucial for a tutor to make the students understand that they are free to ask any doubts or questions without being afraid. I am mostly available out of tuition hours as well via text or call. So I will be there if they have any last…

With one to one teaching a tutor can help a student on a deeper level than in a classroom setting, allowing them to feel they can ask about anything they're not sure on without any fear of the rest of the class judging them. Understanding how children learn on an individual basis (including factoring in neurodivergency) rather than a blanket…

Being a good mentor and setback to the students on how to be in a society. Educating in the right way, making a person a very good being, developing the children's skill is what I think is the most important thing as a tutor. Very good communication where anyone can rely on, interactive person, energetic, enthusiastic person, disciplined, watchful…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only to provide academic guidance but also to be positive and patient with the student, and to acknowledge, reflect and reward upon their successes. I would be a good tutor with Ezymath Tutoring because 1. I am confident in my knowledge and experience in learning and teaching from…

I believe the 3 most important things a tutor can do for a student is: 1. being fluent with the content, 2. giving moral support when necessary and 3. create a sort of friendship with the student. I think my biggest strength as a tutor is to be able to teach via understanding content rather then rope learning, which i think is an imperative…

A good tutor needs to know the content, but more importantly, they need to identify gaps in the student's understanding, even when the students aren't sure where they're struggling. As their tutor, I will ask some surface level questions on different parts of the topics to gauge their understanding. I would consider myself a patient type of…

Giving a student enough time to get understand something. This could mean waiting for a student to attempt a question and ask for help, instead of helping them right away. Waiting gives the student a sense of independence and a confidence boost when they have done a question correctly themselves. I make sure to adapt to the way a child learns…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is getting to know and understand each specific student in depth. To inspire them to think, wonder and understand. At the end of the day, all the work in the learning process is done by the student, my main goal as a tutor is to get them started in such process, to catalyse the natural drive we all have to understand the world around us. I always aim to be enthusiastic, patient and empathetic, trying to…

A tutor is responsible for providing guidance, by leading the way and showing the students that learning does not have to be intimidating and daunting, through their own experience. Moreover, a tutor has to be a motivator, one who serves as a role model and inspires curiosity, so the student is able to reach their full potential. I believe my…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help a student feel confident in their own abilities. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is create a space where the student feels completely comfortable being themselves. They should be able to openly say what they do and don’t understand without fear of judgment. This honesty is what allows us to help them in the best way possible. Beyond that, a tutor should always aim to build…

The most important qualities are patience and compassion. When a tutor is knowledgeable about the subject and shows understanding towards students who are struggling, those students will feel safe and be more open to learning. As each student is unique it is important to assess their level of learning, identify the areas where they are lacking and then provide suitable tutoring. The most important lesson that I always give is that it is totally okay to make mistakes during practice, and I encourage them to make mistakes to see all the different ways they can interpret a question wrong. Melanie, St Kilda

Inside St KildaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Matthew focused on complex numbers—proving properties using geometric arguments—and also tackled advanced trial paper questions involving polynomials and mathematical induction.

Year 11 student Amisha worked through the quantum mechanical nature of atoms, applying the Rydberg equation to electron transitions, and practised solving problems on electromagnetic induction.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Will developed essay writing skills by planning comparative responses for Tracks and Into the Wild, with particular attention to analysing language use and connecting key themes such as individualism and materialism.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, a student often skipped showing full working in interest and credit card problems, which made it hard to catch repeated calculation errors; as noted, "small details were missed due to the habit of skimming over the question and jumping straight to the formula."

In senior English, incomplete homework and weak communication about missing work became an issue—one week, no prior notice was given that set tasks hadn't been attempted.

Exam responses also suffered from minimal essay planning, leading to answers drifting off-topic.

In Extension Maths, forgetting previous feedback meant similar mistakes kept resurfacing during timed proof questions.

Recent Achievements

One St Kilda tutor noticed that Will, a Year 12 English student, has begun to independently spot and explain his own writing errors—something he previously struggled with—and now takes initiative to backcheck his essays before submitting.

In another recent high school session, Amisha made a breakthrough in physics by correctly solving a projectile motion problem using methods she'd found confusing just weeks ago, and her improved test score reflected the shift.

Meanwhile, a younger student showed new engagement by describing themes for class novels out loud after previously being hesitant to share ideas during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yesodei HaTorah College.
