I think the key thing a tutor can do for a student is ensure that their individual learning habits are in order, creating an essential degree of independence. I have found it extremely valuable to ensure students develop a solid work ethic and understand how they can study effectively. In this sense tutoring plays a supplementary role, ensuring…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be loving. Actually caring for the student's academic success will not only make them more likely to succeed, but it will help them go beyond to reaching a scholarly level. My two leading strengths are that I know how to teach to make difficult subjects more easy to understand and I am…

My dream is simple. I want to guide students in a way that goes beyond text books. It's not just about math or science, but the life skills like mindset, the joy of learning, and the art of studying. I believe every tutor should make learning feel a little fun, showing kids that it can be fun and that it isn't boring, which is what is important…

Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. There is a difference between doing all the work for the child and actually teaching how the problem can be approached and observing how the student does it him/herself. If the child is stuck on a concept, it is my responsibility to help the…

The most important thing for a tutor to do for a student is providing as much information as they can. Answer their questions, solve their problems, and make sure that they really understand the material. I am a very good listener. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is provide a learning environment free from both the rigid structure and inherent judgement present in centres of mass education. A calmer, more personal environment allows the establishment of time tables and study plans more conducive to the individual student. There is also…

There could by many reasons why students come to tutoring: they're struggling to keep up, they want to excel or simply their parents want them to go. No matter the reason, what I think is most important for a tutor to do is to try and make the students actually interested in the content in front of them and then aid them as they grapple with it.…

To me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to foster a transformative journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Beyond just imparting knowledge, I believe that a tutor's role is to serve as a guide, mentor, and cheerleader rolled into one. 1. Students who believe they "are just bad at math" will block themselves from learning. It's important to rebuild that self-belief by pacing lessons to guarantee early, small wins that stack into genuine confidence. 2. Don't just hand over answers or act as a human calculator. The goal is to teach independent problem-solving strategies and…

Inside St PetersTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Scarlett practised breaking up four- and six-digit numbers in non-standard ways to build place value understanding, and explored how rearranging digits changes number size.

Year 11 student Sam worked through algebra basics, graphing linear equations, and used the law of cosines to solve trigonometry problems involving similar triangles.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ella focused on quadratic equations—factoring and solving—and applied her knowledge to real-world contexts like calculating tax and depreciation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student expressed feeling overwhelmed by multi-step word problems, often unsure how to break them down; as one tutor noted, "she stated that she is often overwhelmed at all the information given to her."

In Year 10, missing key details in finance and algebra questions led to incomplete answers—skipped questions on a practice test remained unattempted until prompted.

For Year 11, not reviewing all test topics resulted in missed easy marks in rates and ratios, simply because those areas were set aside.

When reading exam questions too quickly in senior years, students lost points from overlooked instructions or misapplied formulas.

Recent Achievements

In Year 11, Kiera had struggled to confidently set up algebraic equations, but she filled out an entire interest table on her own after just a bit of prompting—she even tackled several practice test questions she'd previously avoided and got half of them right without guessing.

Raphael (Year 7) used to need help for every step with algorithms; now he completes most questions solo and explains his reasoning clearly when asked.

Meanwhile, Scarlett in Year 3 has started asking how to spell unfamiliar words instead of skipping them, showing new initiative during writing tasks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Peters / Sydenham Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peters Public School.
