The most important thing is to get a student interested in the topic. Ability to inspire is what people remember about good teachers decades after school. Second is explaining tricky ideas. Third is building self-confidence. Ability to explain, patience, finding interesting examples. I would test a student's knowledge of each topic before moving…

A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. This is very important as it gives a clear direction to the students. This can also help them realise what career path would be good for them. A tutor should also be able to help students…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to share their passion for learning, helping them view education as an exciting adventure rather than just another task. I try to make learning feel like a journey full of discoveries. For example, when my little sister struggles with a tough math problem, I connect it to her…

I believe that a tutors role extends beyond just teaching; they are trusted. It is essential for a tutour to try and ensure that they empower their student, by instilling confidence in them regarding their own ability. I believe the most important things that can be done for students are building their own self esteem as well as providing a conducive environment for their learning process. I consider the student's own eagerness and willingness to learn as the best driving forces to push themselves, and I wish to be the kind of tutor who can help instil those…

A tutor is more than a teacher. A teachers job is to give a student a base level of understanding whereas a tutor can build on that and go further. This allows students to revisit sections that the teacher brushed over or to build on sections they seemingly understand to ensure they can answer a greater range of question types. Along with the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being prepared. I have had 1-1 Spanish tutoring in the past, and every week my tutor would arrive prepared with documents and interactive lessons, which were fundamental in enriching my learning of the subject and making the sessions more enjoyable. I think the most important thing as a tutor you need to be honest, be flexible, be patient, be a good listener, teach the student how to learn. I believe tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more…

I strongly believe the student should be interested in the subject. And I think, it is the role of the tutor to create that interest. The tutor's success is similar to that of a doctor. The most important things a tutor can do for a student involve making the student understand the concepts at a deep level, rather than tutoring them solely for the purpose of achieving higher grades. Fantastic help to my daughter across biology and maths. As well as the technical aspect has been brilliant for her confidence in the HSC year. Highly recommended.
Annie, Summer Hill

Inside Summer HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ruby focused on multiplying fractions by whole numbers and consolidating times tables knowledge.

In Year 8, Sam worked through solving trigonometric equations with domain restrictions and explored the general domain and range of functions using graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack practiced finding intersections of linear lines by solving simultaneous equations and reinforced skills in graphing linear equations accurately.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 trigonometry, skipping the combination of transformations and domain/range meant errors crept into graphing tasks—"struggled to combine and utilise both transformations," a tutor observed.

A Year 9 student repeatedly forgot algebraic simplification rules, especially when incorrectly canceling terms, slowing progress on simultaneous equations.

For a Year 6 learner, confusion about measurement conversions persisted; even after practice, confidence lagged when converting units in problem sets.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student hesitated to attempt worded problems independently and stayed quiet when confused in probability lessons. This led to missed opportunities for feedback and slower growth in reasoning skills.

Recent Achievements

A Summer Hill tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to get distracted is now working through macroeconomics discussion questions with genuine focus and is contributing ideas, not just listening passively.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student who previously hesitated to ask for help with simultaneous equations has started speaking up as soon as she's unsure—last session, she finished all her graphing problems without prompting.

In primary years, one student who would often guess at answers in maths is now stopping to check his reasoning out loud before moving on; last lesson he completed his entire perimeter worksheet correctly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashfield Municipal Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Catholic Primary School.
