It would have to be that a tutor can teach a student a one on one lesson and help him improve his understanding about different ways to approach a maths or english problem which will in turn help the student extremely in the future. A tutor must be like a very smart class mate which doesnt give you the answer directly but instead takes him time to…

I feel like I have spoken about this slightly in the previous questions, but it is defiantly the ability to grow a students passion and interest. Another important thing is the ability to think critically and problem solve in and scenario, as I feel that in schools, students are taught to answer questions instead of actually think, which is a key…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them believe that no matter the circumstances they are in, they can achieve anything they desire. I think my main strength as a tutor is my patience when dealing with students and people in general. Moreover, I am able to dedicate myself fully to learn in order to teach others, should I…

I assert that successful tutors are able to build strong relationships with their students as it personalizes learning. Another thing is to teach to the student's strengths and minimizes the students weaknesses. Every student and their way of learning is different, so, as a tutor, one should be flexible according to the needs of the perplexed…

I think the best tutor is one who guides the students properly and fairly not only in their academics but also about life challenges. Most importantly a tutor should be ready to explain a single concept even 10 times to students if they are not able to get that without getting annoyed Well , I'm quite patient which I think is my biggest strength…

I think the most important thing a tutor can be is patient and supportive. As tutors, we have already completed these subjects, and so we know the 'pressure points' and ways to deal with them. It is our job to pass on this knowledge and help others. If someone is receiving tutoring, most often they are struggling with one or more parts of a topic…

A tutor can explain the main concept, however, the related questions must be solved by the student itself as it promotes the concept of self-learning. As a tutor, I can sometimes unkowingly become their biggest cheerleader and that could really help them overcome any emotional stress that could become a hindrance in their studies. Therefore, a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be there for them and understand their strengths as well as weaknesses. Not all students will be great at every subject however, that does not mean that there is no chance to improve or work harder. Working on a subject with the right help can increase the confidence, which will slowly lead…

A tutor's role is to help guide a student through problems to discover the information for themselves, not to simply complete the question and move on. I believe that a tutor should make a student feel safe enough that they ask as many questions as they need to ask in order to fully understand a topic. A tutor should encourage the student to believe in their own abilities and develop the student's confidence to allow them to eventually approach and solve problems on their own. I believe this type…

Inside Surrey DownsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack focused on fraction operations—multiplying, dividing, adding and subtracting fractions—as well as factorising basic algebraic expressions.

Year 9 student Olivia practised applying the area of a triangle formula to worded problems and built confidence using function notation, linking both to her physics formulas for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Emily worked through transformations of functions and received guidance with her investigation task by breaking down each step visually.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often second-guessed her answers and hesitated to ask for clarification in algebra, which led to avoidable confusion—"she still second guesses herself occasionally," one tutor noted.

In Year 11 Biology, a student showed reluctance to voice questions about feedback loops, missing key points during discussions.

For a Year 7 maths task on linear patterns, the layout of working was messy and made errors harder to spot; "the way he sets out his working is a little hard to follow."

Meanwhile, a primary student avoided tackling nonstandard word problems, skipping those that felt too challenging.

Recent Achievements

One Surrey Downs tutor noted a Year 10 student who used to second-guess her answers is now trusting her instincts and checking her work more often, even taking the initiative to complete extra homework outside school.

Another high schooler, initially shy in physics sessions, started asking questions independently and celebrated a strong test result that really boosted her motivation.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who was hesitant about reading aloud now self-corrects spelling mistakes and read an entire chapter of The Faraway Tree during their session without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Tea Tree Gully Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Surrey Downs Primary School.
