What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, encourage independent thinking, and create a safe and supportive environment for learning. A tutor’s role isn’t just to provide the right answers, but to help the student understand the reasoning behind them. It’s also important to…

I think the most important aspect as a tutor is to listen to the student and foster independence. They should be able to ask as many questions as possible and make them think and learn about problem solving. I think there are a lot of qualities that go into being a good tutor. A few of the most important skills for the field are patience and…

I think the most important thing, is that you not only teach students. You learn to grow with them, you make sure that your students are able to be successful, and you are a small contributor to that success, but along the way, you grow with them, you understand the way they learn, so that you could learn with them. I think that my strengths, are…

I believe an essential aspect to include in tutoring is helping students to develop metacognitive and study skills. In mainstream education, the uniqueness of student learning processes is often neglected. When I tutor students, I highly value teaching the specific study skills that will be most effective for them, imparting not merely content…

A tutor should understand a student's struggle and achievements, and be able to bring out the fun in studying to help them in their academic struggles. I encourage and motivate students to excel and set a foundation for future studies, as well as providing an entertaining and educational environment suitable for each student. As a current student…

It is very important to build their learning skills with creativity more than just learning the facts. I can communicate well with students and see eye to eye on difficult topic. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build genuine understanding and confidence. It's not just about getting the right answer, but about teaching them how to think through a problem independently. I tend to create a comfortable space where students feel safe asking questions, break down complex ideas into clear…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is always listen to them and know what best works for them. This can mean to always pay attention to a student and understand how they learn effectively. This may mean having to make changes and adaptations to your tutoring style which is fine as long as the student gets the…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to learn so that they can become independent learners. Once you understand how the student learns and understands concepts, you are in a better position to provide them with key strategies to hone their skills that will enable them to become independent and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to really help them get the best out of themselves. I think a really good teacher or tutor will always leave their students with a sense that they should always be trying to get the most out of themselves, whatever level that is, and not cheat themselves by being lazy. I think my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping them to understand the work that they are doing in a school setting in a way that is specific to their learning style and helps them to feel comfortable replicating the same skills at school. It is extremely important that a tutor also helps a child to understand that just because…

Instill the resilience and capacity for students to dedicate and apply themselves to their learning rather than being dependent on a tutor to give them all the answers. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only to teach them what to think, but show them how they can independently develop their own original ideas - how they think. This is particularly true for humanities subjects such as English, where it may be challenging for a student to develop their own ideas and write essays…

When a tutor takes personal and genuine responsibility for the learning of the student, it really makes the student want to work hard enough to meet their goals. Active listening. I believe this is the most important trait and thing a tutor can do for a student. This is because our role is to educate and a way of guiding students to take in information in the best or most efficient way, and part of that is listening actively to what the student wants out of tutoring sessions and adjusting however possible…

Inside Surrey HillsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Tom focused on advanced financial maths, tackling reducing balance loans and effective interest rates, and worked through the steps of respiration in Biology.

Year 11 student Olivia reviewed matrix operations including inverses and scalar multiplication, then applied these to communication networks using diagrams for clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Liam practised solving quadratic equations by both factorising and graphing, building fluency with real examples from his textbook.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly hesitated to start worded and application questions, often unable to choose which formula or process was required—on her quadratics test, she left many questions blank unless prompted.

Heavy reliance on the calculator emerged in statistics; when asked to interpret answers without technology, confusion set in: "she struggled with questions that could not be directly done on her calculator."

In Year 8 algebra, one student's working became hard to follow as he crossed out and wrote over steps, occasionally losing marks despite correct answers.

During a Year 7 session, another learner gave up quickly if shortcuts weren't available and avoided writing full working, stalling progress on multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

A Surrey Hills tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with surds now breaking them down and simplifying on her own, even catching her own mistakes—something she'd struggled with before.

In a Year 12 session, a student who previously mixed up types of interest began confidently interpreting finance graphs and distinguishing between accrued and charged interest during exam-style questions.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student showed new independence by asking for extra explanation on probability concepts rather than guessing quietly, which hadn't happened in earlier sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balwyn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Surrey Hills Primary School. Contact us at Ezy Math Tutoring Surrey Hills, 6a Bentley St, Surrey Hills VIC 3127, (03) 9008 7011
