I think some of the key things a tutor can do for a student include the tutor trying the absolute best to ensure the student understands the subject or any difficulties the student is having with the subject. A tutor must never give up but continuously strive to ensure that there student is confident in their ability to succeed in a subject. I…

There are three most important things that tutors can do for their students. First, understand students' weaknesses and try to improve them using a teaching tool. Second, make prepare a good lesson that makes the study more interesting, for example giving small gifts and praise when students provide a good answer or result. Lastly, to be…

Firstly, Building confidence in a student to make him function in his own.Secondly, a tutor should consider himself in terms of the student's point of view. My biggest strength is steering the student in the positive direction and always boosting their confidence level. I believe, once the student feels he could perform, we succeed as a…

The most important thing as a tutor is to help students connect to what they are learning. It is the job of the tutor to differentiate instruction based on the learning preferences of the students. Further, a tutor reinforces what the students have been learning at school. I am a teacher with 15 years of teaching experience. My last school was…

I believe that is to impart the knowledge he/she has to the student about a certain subject, in such way and manner that is very considerate to the mental and emotional well-being and capacity of the student. It is important that the tutor knows his/her student’s capabilities, so the tutor will have a basis on how he/she will tackle the…

From my perspective, a tutor is also a teacher as we teach and deliver knowledge to students. Each student sits at a different level, which requires different tutoring method and approaches. Understanding is key in tutoring as adequate assistance would help a student to achieve their best potentials. Secondly, we as tutoring should make students…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to foster a passion in the student for the subject they are teaching. Once the tutor accomplishes this, the student will be more motivated to work towards improving their results. As such, with some guidance from their tutor, the student will achieve incredible results. One of my main…

I think the most important thing would be to assist a student in achieving their goals but to also challenge them to reach their potential. A tutor should be able to not only teach the content required by the syllabus to also go beyond and provide tips for effective studying or provide advice on future career paths. I think my key strength would…

Initially, he/she must understand the background (educational / intellectual) of the student(s). Moreover, need to understand on where the student is struggling and what he/she wants to achieve. It will give a tutor a great perspective on when and how to start. Then, develop a lesson plan accordingly. Be the guide but not a helper of a student. It…

When I tutor students, I tend not to follow the same pattern or process of learning for every kid. For me, I think the comfortable study atmosphere is vital for the student. The student will not be able to study efficiently in anxiety. Sometimes a student might know the knowledge, but they are too stressful or not confident to write it out. Providing a comfortable study atmosphere for them will be helpful. Also, it is significant to answer the…

The crucial factor a tutor can assist student is show them where to look as most students will have their own way of finding the direction. What I mean by that is teach and make them understand, give them multiple approach of solving an equation, and later they will choose what best suits them. I would say my strength will be the ability to relate…

Inside SylvaniaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Grace focused on finding fractions of whole numbers and converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, using online activities for extra practice.

Year 8 Tia reviewed her recent maths exam and worked on algebra skills including expanding and factorising expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Hayley tackled tree diagrams in probability and practiced trigonometry concepts through targeted past paper questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student faced setbacks in exam preparation by repeatedly avoiding topics she found challenging, focusing revision mainly on familiar content—"most of the questions we did we had already went through before," as one tutor observed.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner struggled with organization, often arriving to sessions without necessary materials or completed homework, which disrupted momentum during lessons.

In primary years, a reluctance to write out working was seen; for example, a Year 4 student frequently skipped setting out steps in subtraction tasks, leading to confusion when reviewing errors.

Each instance chipped away at confidence and slowed visible progress.

Recent Achievements

A Sylvania tutor noticed a big change in Hayley, a high school student who used to hesitate but now regularly asks questions when stuck—she even picked up her old mistakes and corrected them herself this week.

In another session, Olivia managed to finish quadratic equations and similarity problems without help after just a few examples together, showing she's moved past needing step-by-step guidance.

For a younger student, Grace went from struggling with equivalent fractions to simplifying them independently by the end of the lesson, confidently tackling each new example as it came up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sylvania Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sylvania Public School.
