Make the students feel confident on themselves and making them trying out the questions independently first. And let them k know that they can learn more from their mistakes and it’s a normal thing to make mistakes in the classroom. And make them feel comfortable with me and make them feel secure. If they don’t understand the concept I help…

It is also crucial for a tutor to be friendly and approachable to every student. A tutor should be available to help the student cope with any difficulties, even if this requires an extra personal approach to…

Not just tutor them, but be a friend. By opening up and developing a closer bond to students, the students feel more comfortable and it doesn't become a tutoring session, but just a study session. I went through the course(s) myself quite recently, so I understand what's expected on the students, and what they need to do to excel and not only get…

It is always for me to put their thoughts first and give them the importance. It is simply how a student learn and grow. A little bit of channeling of concepts, guidance and being there as a support is what makes it work. It is all about concepts how well you know them and how easy you can make them for students to understand. I always try to…

Approach tutoring with an open mind. Some students can easily grasp the concepts while the others it may take time or a special approach for them to understand.Making the student feel comfortable is very important to allow them to express themselves and feel free to ask if they don't understand. Explaining why things are the way they are instead of…

I believe that it is incredibly important for a tutor to inspire their student to achieve their very best in terms of their academics. I also believe that a tutor can act as a more relatable source of academic help instead of a teacher; a tutor can provide more in depth help outside the class room. I can sympathise with the students in terms of…

To teach a topic is to simplify it, make the students imagine and live in the topic by giving them real life examples and case studies. As a tutor I beleive in understanding student's perspective, I try to put myself in their shoes and consider all the possibilities. While preparing a topic I prepare as if the students know everything (which helps…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build independence and genuine confidence in a student. I firmly believe in the principle that it’s better to teach someone how to catch a fish rather than simply catching one for them. Instead of just handing students the solutions to a specific Math equation, a tutor's role is to equip them with the…

A tutor most importantly needs to understand the areas that the students need improvement. Considering their ability to grasp new concepts and learning styles, a tutor will have to design their teaching methods to suit a particular student. Lastly, a tutor should always encourage their students which will help them gain the confidence to try new…

Creating an environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and exploring ideas they may be unsure about is one of the most important things a tutor can do. The most important thing a tutor can do is be a mentor. These little details play a major role in the tutee's overall success. My strengths as a tutor include deep understanding of…

Personally, the most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire the student to be curious. Being in a 1-to-1 setting, it gives an ideal environment for the student to get personalised help. The most important thing a tutor can do in my opinion is be patient with a student and try and understand the problem from their perspective. The tutor should act like a robust bridge between the student and knowledge. He/she should guide the student in achieving erudition by showing the correct path. Tutors should also try to develop interest in students for subjects and it should not be confined to the prescribed curriculum. On the other hand it is prerogative for the tutor to realize…

A tutor should be able to and simplify a particular concept making it easier for a student to understand. Inside TennysonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ella practised **multiplication facts (especially 3x, 4x, and 6x tables)** using flash cards and games, worked on reading time to the nearest five minutes in both analogue and digital formats, and completed comprehension activities after reading short non-fiction texts.

Year 7 student Alex focused on **solving equations with unknowns on both sides** using step-by-step algebraic manipulation and reviewed key terminology in geometry through labelled diagrams.

For Year 8, Sophia tackled **writing analytical paragraphs for English essays** by breaking down topic sentences and supporting evidence, then revised ratios and percentage problems in maths with real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

Incomplete homework and lack of focus were frequent hurdles for Elsa (Years 3–6). On several occasions, such as one maths session where "she had trouble with the time questions… and was easily distracted," missing work led to confusion in new concepts.

In English, untidy written work—like forgetting to keep letters on the line or rushing sentences—made it harder to spot spelling errors and slowed progress in writing tasks.

Hesitation to try strategies like talking aloud or using pen and paper persisted: "She is still hesitant to try the strategies."

Distraction crept in often, especially during maths problem-solving or when reading unfamiliar words aloud.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Tennyson noticed that Ella, a primary student who used to rush through her English tasks and make careless spelling mistakes, now slows down when writing and self-corrects her pronunciation—something she avoided before.

In recent high school sessions, one student who previously hesitated to answer maths questions has begun taking more risks, confidently tackling times tables without waiting for reassurance.

Another secondary student recently finished a creative writing piece independently after earlier relying heavily on joint planning, showing real initiative by choosing to finish the story solo.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Sebastian's Primary School.
