Teaching minds, touching hearts, transforming lives. Aside from the mastery of the subject being taught, developing a genuine bond between tutor and student, helping them apply or understand the gravity or importance of their study and why they should not take it for granted. In other words, helping them not only in the four corners of the…

Making a student as confident as possible is the upmost important aspect of tutoring in my mind. This is because, no matter how many hours are spent studying, if a student is not confident within themselves, in exam settings they will constantly doubt themselves and make avoidable mistakes. Therefore, building students confidence is the most…

I believe a great tutor goes beyond just increasing a student's marks- they are able to act as a mentor and oversee a student's education holistically. For example, I also guided one of my previous students through his year 12 year, helping him with the university admissions process and scholarship applications, where he is now studying…

Inside The HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emily focused on mastering division facts and multiples through practical exercises.

For Year 9, Jack reviewed financial mathematics topics including depreciation methods and calculating shares with dividend yield, working through exam-style questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah consolidated her understanding of the quadratic formula and practiced completing the square to solve quadratic equations, using worked examples to build confidence for assessments.

Recent Challenges

Several process habits stood out across different year levels.

In Year 11 Financial Mathematics, one student relied heavily on formulas—"Liz tends to just plug numbers in rather than understand the context," noted a tutor—making it difficult when questions changed style or required real-world reasoning.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student working on algebra showed reluctance to attempt "hard-looking" problems and often defaulted to "I don't know" before trying, leading her to avoid deeper problem solving and backchecking.

Another senior student's working out was mostly done mentally; without writing steps down, errors went unnoticed, especially under exam pressure. This sometimes left marks unclaimed despite strong content knowledge.

Recent Achievements

Danika took the initiative to identify and organise her questions before lessons—a shift from earlier sessions where she'd hesitate to speak up.

Liz has become much more willing to challenge her tutor's answers during tricky financial maths topics. Last week she confidently explained her reasoning for z-score problems, even teaching back some concepts she'd struggled with before.

Lara used new time-blocking strategies to plan study sessions and independently completed a challenging linear equations problem without help by the end of her lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newcastle Region Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Newcastle East Public School.
