I try my best to create a safe, supportive environment where students feel encouraged to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. Confidence is key to overcoming challenges and taking ownership of learning, and it requires patience and understanding from the tutor. The most important thing for a tutor to do is understand exactly what that particular student does and does not understand. Many times I remember going to professors consultation hours in there office and asking them a question to which they gave me a long explanation which didn't even address my question leaving me more confused than before. A…

In my opinion, these are: -High level of emotional connection to really see the needs of the student. -High adaptability in its own way of teaching, since maybe there is a different way in which the student can understand more and/or better. -Patience, especially in subjects that are tricky to get. I have a very applied way to understand…

Explaining in the simplistic way that a student can understand. If you can not explain it in simple terms it means you do not understand it. I think it is important for the tutor to influence the student to be more enthusiastic towards his studies. It is easier to learn stuff with focus and the right attitude. The tutor has to try and make sessions interesting. Also, at the end of the day, the student must not be dependent on the tutor. As a tutor, you know you have succeeded when once…

Apart from the obvious requirements to provide sound academic knowledge and advice, the other aspect of tutoring that I consider most important is getting the student excited about learning. The best teachers have a successful balance of both aspects. When a tutor is excited about the content, that will get the student excited as well. An…

I believe a tutor should be confident in his/her abilities and express enthusiasm in teaching the student. A tutor should be honest and upfront about the student's misconceptions and errors and offer advice in a calm and helpful tone. A tutor should be able to share some of his/her own experiences to deepen the connection with the student. A tutor…

As a tutor, it is your obligation to teach in a way that your pupil develops a passion for the topic he is learning. There is nothing worst than somebody who is bored while learning. Focusing on deeply understanding and on practical application is key to awaken a desire to continue learning. "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't…

I think the best thing a tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. Tutoring isn't just about getting through the syllabus, it's about showing students how to think…

Not only can tutors help build up a students' confidence in areas they are particularly weak in, but they can also give insight into what is to come in further years of school and how to prepare for such content. I believe I am good at breaking down harder concepts into individual relatable, easy to understand components to teach separately, then…

Inside The RocksTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Maya worked on plotting graphs and identifying x- and y-intercepts, as well as understanding linear relationships through visual examples.

Year 10 student Alex focused on solving advanced trigonometry questions from a recent test and reviewed polynomials in chapter 22b.1 for deeper algebraic skills.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily practiced expanding and factorising quadratic expressions before tackling worded problems involving algebraic fractions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student needed frequent reminders to finish written DI work and left parts of assignments incomplete, which led to confusion during revision.

In Year 11 English, reluctant to explain effect on audience and often did not link back to topic sentence, making it hard for ideas to develop into full arguments.

A Year 9 learner forgot key steps in long division and avoided double-checking, so errors persisted across sessions.

Another senior student was not fully prepared for the test on domain and range—missing notes meant time was spent re-learning rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One tutor in The Rocks noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who used to rely heavily on worked examples but now solves algebraic fraction problems independently, showing real independence.

A Year 12 student, after struggling to organise her ideas, managed to write a detailed speech plan unprompted—something she'd avoided before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who was hesitant to ask for help has started putting her hand up when stuck and recently read an entire short paragraph aloud with only one prompt for support.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Customs House Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre.
