The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient. From my previous experience, one of the most important things I have learned about students is that some of them are just afraid of asking questions because they think that their questions are stupid or their questions do not matter. If the tutor cannot be patient with the…

To me, a tutor has to be approachable to the students so that the students do not hesitate in approaching him/her at the time of their needs. He/she needs to be a beacon of hope for the students who can guide them in the early stages of their lives. The trust of the students in their tutor is paramount and he/she should upheld it to their…

Being able to meet the needs of the parents and students. Every student is unique and they have goals that they wish to achieve. Although these goals may be similar, I believe a tutor must listen attentively and work towards these particular targets so they can achieve what the student desires. Tutors are just not there to help students with their students. Their most important role is to be friends and be able to guide their students in the right direction. If tutors become friends, the students listen and trust them more. Of course this does not mean that students can take tutors for a ride. As a tutor I am hardworking, diligent and…

A tutor can provide the pathway of learning. The tutor should understand the position of his/her students. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for their students is to educate them at the student's own speed. The teacher should encourage and bring the best out of the students, not compare to other students. It is not always about students competing with each other, but doing their best and improving daily. I think my strengths are:…

Inside ThornleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Tahlia focused on calculating percentage increase and decrease, including real-life applications like mark up, cost price, and discounts, completing extra questions from her test book for practice.

Year 9 student Malissa worked on simplifying algebraic expressions and revisited the topic of surface area with targeted review based on her recent test feedback.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Hayes practiced division with remainders and applied BODMAS rules to fraction problems, before touching on area calculations for squares, rectangles, and circles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for linear regression relied heavily on calculator methods without showing working, which made it harder to spot small errors or check understanding.

In a Year 8 English session, Ryan received feedback on his writing but did not act on it before the next lesson; as noted, he did not put the feedback into practice yet, so similar issues reappeared.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student sometimes mixed up units and tens columns in multiplication, leading to off-track answers. This meant time was spent correcting basics instead of advancing to new skills.

Recent Achievements

A Thornleigh tutor recently noticed a big shift in Tahlia, a high school student who used to hesitate when she got stuck—she's now actively asking questions and working through tricky algebra problems instead of giving up.

Another win came from Ashton, also in high school, who scored 93% on his term test after weeks of focused revision; he tackled log, trigonometry, and simultaneous equations confidently this time.

Meanwhile, Hayes in primary school showed real diligence by completing all his assigned maths problems before moving on to extra challenges during their session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Pennant Hills Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Thornleigh West Public School.
