I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clarity, build confidence, and foster independent thinking. A tutor should help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills so they can tackle future challenges independently. Rather than just providing answers, I focus on guiding students to…

A good tutor should be several things. They are an accountability partner, a mentor in the area the student wishes to improve in, and they are also a source of inspiration for the student. Doing a couple questions in the lesson but not finishing the rest of the homework is not good enough. It is a huge success for a tutor to be able to encourage…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to provide encouragement and maybe change their perspective on a subject that may seem difficult and overwhelming, to know they can achieve success in that subject. While creating a positive and inviting environment, where students are not anxious to ask questions or be involved, by…

As a tutor, my main focus is on getting to know each student personally – their strengths, weaknesses and what they want to achieve. I feel as though a comfortable space where they feel comfortable exploring ideas, asking questions, and even making mistakes is something important as through mistakes you can learn. To begin with, a tutor must encourage a student to do better and learn from previous mistakes. Getting upset/impatient with a student is only going to discourage the student and prevent him/her from reaching potential; and that's the opposite of the desired goal. In addition, confidence has to be built in a student; this way a student will be able…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be understanding and patient. I was a student just a few weeks ago and it was extremely stressful to learn so much knowledge. Having an understanding and patient teacher gives students freedom and reliance as they can always consult them whenever in need. This gives students a peace of mind…

I think the most important something a tutor can do for a student when it comes to trying to teach them is, being close to them and on their level. That way, it is easier for the student to absorb information coming from you as it would feel like the information is coming from a friend and not someone who is greater than them or better than them…

A tutor is simply an extension of learning tool from school, when students feel like school's teaching may not be sufficient. A tutor must be able to accurately evaluate the student's level and how strong their understandings are, and design their lessons accordingly. Flexibly tailored lesson plans for students, as it is 1 on 1, are a must for the…

A tutor's main focus should be on helping the student improve their abilities and assisting them in overcoming their weaknesses. Most importantly, a tutor…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to unlock their potential. It’s not just about explaining concepts—it’s about making the student believe they can conquer anything. Inside ToongabbieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Aman focused on solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, and also practised graphing linear equations from given formulas.

Year 11 student Grace revised differentiation techniques for trigonometric functions as part of the Stage 6 Maths Advanced calculus curriculum, then moved to integration problems involving exponentials and logarithms.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Priya tackled Financial Mathematics by calculating compound interest and worked through sequences in arithmetic series, reinforcing these with targeted exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student's tendency to copy notes too quickly led to missing signs—"he would be copying notes but miss a sign or two because he go past too fast"—resulting in confusion when factorising expressions.

For a Year 11 trigonometry graphing task, another struggled with interpreting questions that were "a little wordy," making it harder to tackle exam-style problems without pausing to fully read instructions.

In both cases, the urge to rush or avoid careful reading meant extra time was spent fixing errors rather than building fluency with more challenging material.

Recent Achievements

During a Toongabbie tutoring session, Grace, a high school student, tackled her recent exam with noticeably greater independence. She earned most of her marks in financial mathematics and statistics after previously hesitating on multi-step problems.

Another tutor noted Oliver, also in high school, who now solves financial calculation questions quickly and confidently, having struggled before to select the right formulas without prompting.

Meanwhile, Isaac in Year 6 has started asking clarifying questions about his assignments rather than waiting for hints. This shows a real shift from passive participation to active engagement during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Constitution Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anthony's Primary School.
