Teaching the content required within a particular subject is only the start of what a tutor can do for their student, but teaching them how to apply everything they have learned to not only the subject at hand but how they are tested within that subject. Since going through the HSC I have learned that some subjects teach content in a very…

Focus on his weaknesses and try to overcome them. I think it is really essential to maintain a genuine environment under which students an freely ask about their queries. So, most importantly, a tutor should build a genuine atmosphere of learning. I can easily be understood and my ways to explain things are great. In a teaching environment, it is…

Giving motivation, goals and direction. I always loved tutors who could give me a purpose to life on top of knowledge of school content. I've always been in the tutoring scene back when I was in primary and all throughout high school. I know what kids want in a tutor and I will try my best to meet them. I have exceptional interpersonal skills and…

Being both supportive and empathetic are important. Encouraging a student and not making a huge deal about mistakes while congratulating correct responses builds a student's self-confidence which makes them perform better overall and develop a liking for the subject. Also, being understanding when the student struggles to perform when facing more…

Be patient in explaining the same concepts a number of times. Do their jobs honestly and make sure that the student understands the core fundamentals and not just the shortcuts. Impart discipline. I believe that I am a very calm individual. It doesn't matter if a person asks me the same questions over and over again. I would still respond with the…

A tutor's purpose is to cover a student's weak points that they may not be able to understand in school. They need to be able to effectively supplement a student and allow them to reach their full potential. Being friendly and adapting their teaching speed to the pace of the student. not having one universal teaching style, but altering it is how you keep the student interested and make it easier for them to grasp the concept. For example, using sports examples to explain a physics concept to a high school athlete will keep them engaged longer and add…

Most important point of being a tutor isn't the ability of doing the question yourself, or understanding it yourself, as a tutor this is already expected, so conveying the concept to the student in such a way that they are able to convey it along to someone else is one of the fundamental aspects of tutoring. Helping students with topics they…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to respect their intellect. A tutor must always be careful not to break a student’s confidence. Sometimes, students may feel low for not being able to catch up to their friends. In such case, it is very important as a tutor to encourage the student and bring back his confidence. Childhood…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a safe and supportive space where the student feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I think a tutor should NOT ROTE-learn, nor encourage it. I have had tutors support this method - and this is of no help. Hence, the most important thing a tutor can do is do for the student is to really guide/build upon the foundation of knowledge that the current student has (through discussion/exercises). This involves careful listening and…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to be open and offer an open exchange of exchange of information that allows a student to freely delve into a subject. Inside ToongabbieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Aman focused on solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, and also practised graphing linear equations from given formulas.

Year 11 student Grace revised differentiation techniques for trigonometric functions as part of the Stage 6 Maths Advanced calculus curriculum, then moved to integration problems involving exponentials and logarithms.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Priya tackled Financial Mathematics by calculating compound interest and worked through sequences in arithmetic series, reinforcing these with targeted exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student's tendency to copy notes too quickly led to missing signs—"he would be copying notes but miss a sign or two because he go past too fast"—resulting in confusion when factorising expressions.

For a Year 11 trigonometry graphing task, another struggled with interpreting questions that were "a little wordy," making it harder to tackle exam-style problems without pausing to fully read instructions.

In both cases, the urge to rush or avoid careful reading meant extra time was spent fixing errors rather than building fluency with more challenging material.

Recent Achievements

During a Toongabbie tutoring session, Grace, a high school student, tackled her recent exam with noticeably greater independence. She earned most of her marks in financial mathematics and statistics after previously hesitating on multi-step problems.

Another tutor noted Oliver, also in high school, who now solves financial calculation questions quickly and confidently, having struggled before to select the right formulas without prompting.

Meanwhile, Isaac in Year 6 has started asking clarifying questions about his assignments rather than waiting for hints. This shows a real shift from passive participation to active engagement during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Constitution Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anthony's Primary School.
