I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is truly understand the person’s problems, challenges, and learning gaps. Everyone learns differently, and effective tutoring begins with listening carefully and identifying where they are genuinely struggling. A tutor should pause and address difficulties properly rather than rushing to simply…

A tutor can inspire a student to learn more and be inquisitive. Making the student ask more questions and grasp the concepts, are the major things a tutor can do for a student. I am patient when it comes to teaching students. Each student is different in their academic potential, as such, I can assess the best path for the student so that they…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is pose as their mentor than just a teacher. By doing this, a student will feel safe, and empowered; this in turn will make them learn better. Moreover, it is important for a tutor to build their confidence. It is essential to build on the weak areas of a student. Additionally, a…

Communication is very important, as it is vital that the student is able to convey any questions, misunderstandings or opinions to the tutor for a tailored tutoring experience to occur. It is also at the same time that the tutor needs to be precise and straightforward with their explanation on different concepts. I think I generally build a…

I consider that a tutor should be a good teacher but also a good person. He should be able to communicate and transmit his passion to give the desire to learn. (I am a native french so I can also teach french). Firstly I would say that my experience is my biggest strength, my computer science school allows me a lot of flexibility so I am available…

According to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence and positive mindset in a student which can empower the student to take on challenges. Developing a love for learning also goes a long way, as a tutor teaches a subject which he likes he can encourage curiosity and passion for the subject in his students…

Support, guide, motivate and teach the student until he don't understand. A tutor should get sense of satisfaction after his student gets satisfied. The way I give real life examples on the topic to the students then they don't forget the things till the years. Moreover, the motivation and the worldly-wisdom I give to the students, their mind…

At any point, I should be patient and follow their speed. If I tutor one person at a time, the biggest advantage would be being able to figure out in detail what they are struggling with. So, I can make small but definite improvements by giving them the different levels of questions, from the lowest they can do to the level they need to achieve.…

According to me, the most important thing as a tutor is to try and try until the student understands, although it takes a lot of patience and time. It is also important to explore the student's best way of learning, which may include audio, visual, or kinesthetic, and make efforts to teach them accordingly. As a tutor, I first make my students…

I think listening to them to make sure their needs are known and understood by all parties involved. A good tutor needs to understand the student's needs and areas of weakness and work on them. A tutor can engage more in helping the student understand specific concepts and make the environment of teaching interesting. I think a tutor should be able to tell if their student understands something or not, often they don't say it outright and asking them directly might not get them to admit it. So by asking them to solve a question that indirectly uses the concept might help us figure out if they're having trouble or not. Students should also feel comfortable with…

I believe that a tutor should be able to build relationships with a student where the students are provided with an environment where they are heard and observed. Inside Toorak GardensTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex focused on calculating surface area and volume for a range of 3D shapes, alongside reinforcing index laws and an introduction to surds.

In Year 10, Sarah practiced applying quadratic equations to real-life problems and revised methods for solving for x in quadratics, including factorising and using the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Liam tackled advanced trigonometric functions by graphing transformations of sine and cosine curves and began exploring applications of the unit circle using worked examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student arrived to tuition without key materials, including their calculator and textbook, which slowed progress on algebra practice.

In a senior lesson, a Year 11 student tried to solve quadratic equations in their head—"mistakes are barely detected and noticed when you go back and check"—but avoided writing out steps, making it hard to catch errors or gain partial marks.

Another student's maths book was described as disorganised during square root exercises, causing confusion when reviewing work.

Meanwhile, a primary learner appeared distracted during explanations of surface area for cylinders, missing important clarification in the moment.

Recent Achievements

One Toorak Gardens tutoring session saw a Year 10 student, Ariana, move from confusion with completing the square to confidently tackling quadratic equations on her own and achieving a top band score of 70/74 in her recent test—she now explains each step logically without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student who used to hesitate with fraction questions has begun working through indices problems almost entirely independently, showing real initiative when faced with new topics.

In Year 5, one student has started identifying perimeters and simpler shapes in composites much more quickly than before, even checking their answers aloud as they work.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marryatville High School.
