What do I enjoy most about tutoring? ๐
The most enjoyable thing about tutoring is watching how much progress my students gain gradually from each session. I volunteered in the SAS and RAS mentoring programs for free in high school and tutored around 30 students of various years of 7-12. Some of them started the session being unsure about a certain maths concept and it was really rewarding to see how after some worked examples and explanations, that they eventually understood the process and was able to solve similar questions on their own by the end of the hour session. Moreover, I formed great friendships + received appreciations.
My Strengths as Tutor ๐ช
Firstly, I am generally good at observing and noticing emotional changes in my students and act on it. For example, if they are starting to feel bored or stressed, then having a brief break or conversation to build relationships may be more suitable in long tutoring sessions. Secondly, I am relatively confident in my academic capabilities to know what I am teaching. I am predicted to have 99+ ATAR with full marks in all of my internals IA1 and IA2, and half of IA3s for English, Chemistry, and Physics. Also did Methods, Specialist, Economics, and Chinese SEE. I can tutor in mandarin too.
Most important things I can do for a student ๐
The most important things I am concerned about are my studentsโ progress and emotions, often even over results. If someone is reluctant to learn, which can be common in the volunteering programs I mentored at, then I believe first building a relationship, understanding why, and to provide engagement may be more important. Nonetheless, if a student is interested in learning, then another important aspect of tutoring is ensuring the method of teaching is tailored to the studentโs needs, preferences, and areas of concern. Visual methods; I do, we do, you do methods, and more are some examples too
