What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

I really enjoyed tutoring since I was a school girl. I was the one who used to help out my classmates with all the doubts they are having. From there, I started my informal tutoring journey which was really interesting. I have a younger brother who I used to teach. He had difficulties with maths and I have tried different ways to make it easier and it worked. For me, the outcome is more important. If they are able to understand what they thought was difficult with my teaching methods, that is the most enjoyable part.

My Strengths as Tutor 💪

I think I can very compassionate and also easily understands the weak points of the students. I then help them to get over this by finding easier ways to overcome. I mainly understands what the student likes the most and then link it with that so he/she can easily catch up.

Most important things I can do for a student 🏅

I think the best thing to do is to understand the student, know about his interests and be supportive.

About Joan

Strong STEM Background for Maths Support

Joan is currently completing a Master of Professional Engineering in Chemical Engineering, building on an honours degree in the same field. This gives her a deep and practical understanding of maths concepts such as algebra, problem-solving, and data interpretation that students often struggle with in upper primary and high school. She is used to breaking down complex equations into clear, step-by-step methods, and can show students how classroom maths connects to real-world engineering and everyday problem-solving.

Clear Communicator Who Explains Things Simply

Through her work in busy, customer-facing roles, Joan has developed excellent communication skills and a calm, friendly manner. She regularly explains information clearly to people from different backgrounds and ages, and manages multiple tasks while staying patient and organised. This translates directly into her tutoring style: she listens carefully, checks understanding with simple examples, and adjusts explanations until a student really “gets it”, especially in English instructions for maths questions and written working.

Patient, Reliable and Highly Organised Tutor

Joan’s experience handling responsibility—such as managing cash, following strict procedures, and keeping operations running smoothly—shows in her tutoring sessions. She plans lessons carefully, keeps track of a student’s progress, and helps them set realistic goals. As a multilingual speaker of English and two additional languages, she is particularly understanding of students who may be learning in their second language, and she creates a supportive, down-to-earth environment where they feel comfortable asking questions and building confidence.
