What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

Tutoring is a platform that allows me to give back to the community by sharing the opinions and insights that I have learned from my academic experiences, such as taking the selective exam and VCE. For example, from my time tutoring at Schoolhouse.World, I hosted a session on English Grammar for 15-20 students who were struggling with it. When I was taking the SATs, I was struggling with the nuances of grammar too. Being able to share my personal experience (ie., the tactics that I used) to ensure that the students could be stronger in English grammar was what I greatly enjoyed.

My Strengths as Tutor πŸ’ͺ

One of my strengths is simplifying complex material and adapting my explanations to suit the student’s unique learning style. Studying Maths, English and Economics at a school and university level (through my Law/Economics degree) fostered a deep understanding that allows me to explain concepts in multiple ways. For example, when a student was struggling to get the answer to a worded Algebra problem through a discussion-based explanation, I recognised that they would respond better to a visual approach. By drawing out the scenario, they gained more clarity and could find the answer.

Most important things I can do for a student πŸ…

One of the most important things that a tutor can do is help instil confidence in students, something I have seen firsthand is just as critical to success as talent and hard work. I would encourage students to go beyond what they believe their academic capabilities are - for example, encouraging the students who I was tutoring for Economics to try practice questions on content which they were not completely sure of. By showing the belief I held in their capabilities, they were able to perform better than expected, which gave them a newfound level of belief and improved their confidence.
