What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

What I enjoy the most about tutoring is that moment when something finally clicks for a student. It is not just about getting the right answer either, it is about the shift in how they end up approaching the next problem. On top of this, tutoring keeps me sharp on the fundamentals, since teaching a concept properly forces you to understand it much more deeply than just knowing it. When I ran C/C++ tutorials for the new members of the HKUST Robotics Team, my own understanding ended up getting significantly stronger and I became a better engineer because of that.

My Strengths as Tutor 💪

My biggest strength as a tutor is really the combination of patience and adaptability. The thing about students is that every one of them thinks a bit differently, and what I focus on doing is finding the right analogy or example rather than just repeating the same explanation in a louder voice. On top of this, I am also strong when it comes to breaking down complex ideas into smaller and more digestible steps, and this is something that comes from my experience of running C/C++ and control systems tutorials for the new members of the HKUST Robotics Team.

Most important things I can do for a student 🏅

The most important thing that a tutor can do is help the student build a genuine understanding of the material, rather than just having them memorize the answers. What this means in practice is asking the kinds of questions that push them to actually think, being patient when concepts take a bit of time to land and adjusting the explanations until something clicks. On top of this, a good tutor should also model curiosity and honesty, which includes admitting when there is something that they do not know, because that is how students really learn how to learn.
