What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
What I enjoy most is seeing a student finally understand something they'd been stuck on. I spent about two months helping my friend's younger sister with her IGCSE maths and it was so nice watching her get to that point where it clicked and she realised it was actually a lot easier than it looked once she understood it. I was tutored myself growing up and I really liked how some of my tutors taught me so I've tried to use that same approach of breaking things down and going step by step. It genuinely brings me joy to see a student get motivated and start to like a subject they used to dread,My Strengths as Tutor 💪
My biggest strength is patience and breaking things down into simple steps, something I picked up from the tutors I had growing up. When I helped my friend's sister with her IGCSE maths, I'd explain a topic a different way whenever the first method didn't land, until it made sense. I'm confident in the subject too, with an A* in IGCSE Maths and an A at A-Level and I'm now studying maths-heavy Economics at university. From years of teaching dance, I'm also used to adapting to each person and keeping them relaxed enough to ask questions.Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
I think the most important thing is to keep the student calm rather than adding to their stress. If a tutor is tense or impatient, the student picks up on that so I make a point of staying calm and relaxed so they feed off that and feel at ease. The other big one is being able to break things down simply, explaining a concept in a way that's genuinely easy to understand rather than overwhelming them. Moreover, I think a good tutor builds a student's confidence so they stop being afraid of the subject and start believing they can actually do it.Tutoring students in 👦 👧

About Alisha
My background in maths
I'm studying a Bachelor of Economics at the University of Sydney, with coursework in statistics, econometrics and mathematical methods. I finished school with an A* in IGCSE Mathematics and an A at A-Level, so maths has always been the subject I was most comfortable in. I tutor maths from primary through to Year 12, either in person within about 12km of the city or online.
How I teach

When I spent two months helping a friend's younger sister with her IGCSE maths, I'd explain a topic a different way whenever the first explanation didn't land, until it finally made sense to her. I also taught dance to students aged eight to sixteen for five years, which is where I learned to read how someone is feeling and adjust to them rather than sticking to a structured plan.
Working on exam technique
A lot of students understand the content but still lose marks, usually to careless errors or running out of time. I had the same problem myself and went from not finishing exam papers to finishing them with time to spare, so it's something I work on directly rather than just telling a student to be more careful. That means checking work as you go rather than at the end and practising questions against the clock.
