What I enjoy most about tutoring is the combination of teaching and problem-solving. I’m naturally someone who wants to understand why something works rather than just memorise an answer, and I think that carries strongly into how I tutor. I think my biggest strengths as a tutor are my patience and empathy. I understand that students can find it frustrating or even embarrassing when they don’t understand something, so I try to create an environment where they feel completely comfortable asking questions, getting things wrong and telling me when an explanation hasn’t made sense. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student become confident enough that they eventually don’t need you. Of course, improving their understanding and academic results is important, but I think good tutoring goes beyond simply getting through content or showing a student how to answer a particular question. A tutor should create an environment where a student feels comfortable saying “I don’t understand†without feeling embarrassed or judged.
