What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

What I enjoy most about teaching and coaching is seeing the moment something clicks for a child. When I coach my Under 14 hockey team or train new crew at McDonald's, the best part is watching someone go from unsure to confident, and I'd love to bring that to tutoring. With primary school students in particular, you can make a big difference by helping them enjoy maths and English early, before they decide they're "bad" at it.

My Strengths as Tutor 💪

My biggest strengths are patience, clear explanations and encouragement. I've trained new team members for four years, so I'm used to breaking a task into simple steps and checking they understand before moving on. I'm also reliable and organised, which comes from balancing university, work and national-level hockey. I finished school early and started university at 16, so I understand how to learn and study well and can pass those habits on to students. I'm also friendly and calm with young people through coaching, umpiring and volunteering with Red Frogs.

Most important things I can do for a student 🏅

The most important thing is to build the student's confidence, because children learn best when they feel safe to make mistakes. Beyond that, a tutor should work out where the student is struggling, explain things in a way that suits how they learn, and go at their pace. Tutors should also give encouragement and clear feedback, celebrate small wins, and communicate with parents so everyone knows how the student is progressing. The goal is to help the child learn to work things out for themselves, not just to get through the homework.
