Listening to students and identifying the areas in which students need additional assistance is one of the most crucial roles of a tutor. Therefore, tutors must be responsive to students by carefully listening to their areas of concern, and taking these into account in order to organize lessons that are best suited for developing the necessary skills of the student to excel in a subject. Furthermore, where students are not completely sure what their areas of concern are, a tutor must be able to pose certain tasks, observe and identify the ways in which a student needs help.

While Jessica picks up on mathematical methods pretty quickly, she may find it more difficult to identify what a questions is asking, especially if it is a worded problem question. She'll need to familiarize herself with certain vocabulary as well as logical comprehension of mathematical scenarios.
