I think that behind each grade/score is the amount of work put into studying, which in turn is mostly driven by a person’s self-esteem. I believe that the more a person is accepting of the way they personally think and learn, the more comfortable they are to actually put in the work to achieve their highest potential. Therefore the most important things a tutor can do for a student in my opinion are to facilitate an environment where it’s okay to make mistakes but it’s important to try your best, and to give them the tools to study on their own.
