In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to break a concept down to its simplest form. In my school days, I often found this to be the easiest way to learn. If your basic foundation of any concept is strong, it gets much easier to build on that and learn more complex information pertaining to it. Moreover, being available beyond classes is very important. For a student, knowing that your tutor is just a text away in case any questions pop up can be very reassuring.
