I think the best thing an english tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. Tutoring isn't just about getting through the syllabus, it's about showing students how…

I think the most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to make them feel proud and confident with themselves as well as being a supportive teacher. I know from experience that when you're struggling with a concept it is a very disheartening thing and can lead to self doubt and giving up. I think a tutor should help a student…

Personalise the experience. It is vital to get t know the student, their concerns, their best learning style. The pace and content of the sessions needs to be adapted to the student's ability to achieve confidence and competence. Deep experience and thorough up to date knowledge, empathy (I am a parent to Yr 11 & 12 boys, as well as a tutor),…

English Tutor Point Clare, NSW
Be kind and patient, and be able to adjust learning plans for the student. I am that I am a compassionate person who believes in the potential of all people. Nobody is unable to succeed, they just might require different solutions to the same struggle. I also believe myself to be good at breaking down topics, as I did this multiple times for my…

Offering them ways to easily comprehend subjects and topics, making subjects more enjoyable. I will try my very hardest to ensure my students feel that they are able to openly express their thoughts and to answer questions without the fear of judgement. English Tutor Booker Bay, NSW
I believe a truly effective tutor can accurately pinpoint the source of a student's struggle with a particular topic, and propose the correct solution. For example, trouble with foundational concepts often stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of the basics, therefore it is important to readdress the theory portion of the topic and provide…

Help them to improve their abilities in areas they are not so confident in. Be there for them as a mentor as well as a teacher. I am organised and work well with others. I also have a good grasp of the subject. Sometimes I pay too much attention to small…

Jessica went really well with Zara. We're really impressed with how focused Zara is during the session/s and this is obviously in part to Jessica's approach and interest in the student. Certainly off on the right start.

Inside WagstaffeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Zac worked on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions—including mixed and improper forms—practising how to simplify answers and interpret mathematical language like "of" as multiplication.

For Year 9, Emily tackled rearranging formulae to change the subject and substituted values into equations for homework questions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Aiden focused on finding unknown angles in right-angled triangles using Pythagoras' theorem and SOHCAHTOA, applying these skills to targeted homework problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student arrived without his notes and workbook—this meant he had no clear guide for exam revision and felt unprepared. "He also left his notes and school work book at school so he didn't have any guidelines for revision."

For a Year 10 session, the absence of a calculator led to delays as questions requiring Pi could not be solved efficiently; as noted, "he mentioned it might be under his bed."

Another Year 9 student tackled trigonometry but skipped writing out steps, which made sign errors harder to spot. In these moments, confidence faltered when resources or process weren't in place.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Wagstaffe noticed a big shift with a Year 8 student who, after previously hesitating to speak up, started asking for extra homework and even requested help with challenging school tasks—something he'd never done before.

In a recent high school session, another student who struggled to recall steps in rearranging formulas was able to substitute values independently and check his own work.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student went from needing reminders on clock problems to confidently drawing currency diagrams and tackling worded money questions using strategies she'd practised the week before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Umina Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pretty Beach Public School.
